The Houthis today (Wednesday) acknowledged the assassination of the prominent Quran teacher in Al-Raima Governorate in central Yemen, Saleh Hantous, and the injury of several family members, as well as the destruction of his home after a siege that lasted more than 24 hours on his house in one of the remote villages in Al-Salfiah District, according to a statement published by their media.
This assassination by the Houthis has sparked outrage among the Yemeni people, who confirmed that the Houthis are exploiting the regional situation to commit crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.
The Yemeni Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Muammar Al-Eryani, condemned in the strongest terms the heinous crime committed by the Houthis in assassinating Hantous and his grandson Hamza, following a siege that lasted several hours and an armed attack targeting his home in Al-Salfiah District in Al-Raima Governorate. He affirmed in a statement that Hantous was subjected to more than 20 armed patrols and shelling with various types of weapons, including RPG shells, during the siege of his house, which resulted in his wife sustaining serious injuries, the upper part of his house being destroyed, and neighboring houses being burned, before they later executed him and his grandson in cold blood, in a scene that reflects their brutality and disregard for the sanctity of Yemeni blood.
Al-Eryani pointed out that this crime, committed in full view of the world, confirms the Houthis' continued perpetration of murder and terror against Yemenis without any religious or moral restraint, and without fear of any accountability or punishment, taking advantage of the suspicious international silence regarding these ongoing brutal violations against civilians.
He noted that the Houthis are practicing terrorism against an unarmed people, confiscating the lives of Yemenis, violating the sanctity of their homes and mosques, targeting the elderly, teachers, and religious figures, and killing women and children, in an attempt to break the will of the Yemeni community and impose their imported sectarian project through force and terror. He affirmed that this crime will not be forgotten over time and that the blood of Hantous and his grandson, along with the cries of women and children under Houthi shelling, will remain a trust in the hands of free Yemenis, who will pursue the killers and criminals and all those involved or inciting these crimes until they receive their just punishment.
Al-Eryani called on the international community and human rights organizations to issue a clear condemnation of this heinous crime, to take responsible positions to stop Houthi violations against civilians, to urgently classify the Houthis as a terrorist organization, and to impose strict sanctions on their leaders, inciters, and financiers, and to support the efforts of Yemenis in restoring their state and dismantling the terrorist project that threatens Yemen and the region.
The Yemeni Minister of Information condemned the departure of the UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, to the temporary capital, Aden, today without issuing any position or comment regarding the heinous crime committed by the Houthis in Al-Raima Governorate, affirming that this complete silence from the UN envoy and his office is not only disappointing for the hopes of Yemenis but also reveals a serious gap in commitment to the fundamental principles of UN work, foremost among them the protection of civilians and holding human rights violators accountable.
He pointed out that ignoring this horrific crime reflects a blatant double standard and raises urgent questions about the seriousness and credibility of the UN mission's performance, which is supposed to be a voice for justice, not a silent witness to crimes.
He emphasized that the responsibility of the UN envoy is not merely technical or negotiable, but it is a legal and moral responsibility towards civilians, in accordance with international humanitarian law and the UN Charter, and that ignoring serious violations undermines confidence in the mediation role and opens the door for perpetrators to escape punishment.
