فيما استدعت الحكومة البريطانية السفيرة الإسرائيلية بشأن توسيع العمليات العسكرية في غزة، أعلن وزير الخارجية البريطاني ديفيد لامي، اليوم (الثلاثاء)، تعليق مفاوضات اتفاقية التجارة الحرة مع إسرائيل، موضحاً إن بلاده لا يمكن أن تقف مكتوفة الأيدي أمام ممارسات إسرائيل.
وقال الوزير البريطاني: أسلوب إدارة إسرائيل لحرب غزة يضر بالعلاقات الثنائية، مضيفاً: الإفراج عن الرهائن في غزة تم بالدبلوماسية وليس العمل العسكري.
وأشار إلى إن 9,000 شاحنة مساعدات تنتظر دخول غزة، وعلى نتنياهو رفع الحصار، مبيناً إن حكومة نتنياهو تنتهج سياسات فظيعة في غزة والضفة الغربية.
وكان رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر قد قال في وقت سابق اليوم إنه وزعيمي فرنسا وكندا يشعرون بالفزع إزاء التصعيد في قطاع غزة. وجددوا دعوتهم إلى وقف إطلاق النار.
من جهة أخرى، عين الاتحاد الأوروبي، اليوم (الثلاثاء)، الدبلوماسي الفرنسي كريستوف بيجو، ممثلاً خاصاً جديداً لعملية السلام في الشرق الأوسط.
وقال الاتحاد الأوروبي، إن تفويض بيجو سيتمثل في تحقيق هدف الاتحاد الأوروبي في التوصل إلى سلام عادل ودائم وشامل في الشرق الأوسط، استناداً إلى حل الدولتين، مبيناً إن مهمة بيجو ستتمثل أيضاً في تسهيل الاتصالات مع جميع أطراف عملية السلام، خصوصاً إسرائيل والسلطة الفلسطينية، والتواصل مع الشركاء العرب لتنفيذ مبادرة السلام العربية.
وقال الاتحاد إن بيجو سيتولى منصبه الجديد في الثاني من يونيو ولمدة 12 شهراً.
وكان بيجو سفيراً لفرنسا لدى إسرائيل في الفترة من 2009 إلى 2013، وسبق له شغل العديد من المناصب الدبلوماسية في فرنسا والأمم المتحدة وغيرها.
وتزامن التعيين مع تصاعد الغضب في أوساط الزعماء الأوروبيين الذين هددوا باتخاذ إجراءات ضد إسرائيل إذا لم توقف هجومها العسكري الجديد على غزة، وترفع القيود التي فرضتها على دخول المساعدات إلى القطاع منذ أوائل مارس.
وكان مسؤول سويدي قد قال إن بلاده ستطلب من الاتحاد الأوروبي فرض عقوبات على وزراء إسرائيليين.

While the British government summoned the Israeli ambassador regarding the expansion of military operations in Gaza, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced today (Tuesday) the suspension of free trade agreement negotiations with Israel, stating that his country cannot stand idly by in the face of Israel's actions.
Lammy said: Israel's management of the Gaza war harms bilateral relations, adding: The release of hostages in Gaza was achieved through diplomacy, not military action.
He pointed out that 9,000 aid trucks are waiting to enter Gaza, and that Netanyahu should lift the blockade, indicating that Netanyahu's government is pursuing horrific policies in Gaza and the West Bank.
Earlier today, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that he and the leaders of France and Canada are horrified by the escalation in the Gaza Strip. They reiterated their call for a ceasefire.
On another note, the European Union appointed French diplomat Christophe Begue today (Tuesday) as the new special representative for the Middle East peace process.
The European Union stated that Begue's mandate will be to achieve the EU's goal of reaching a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, based on a two-state solution, adding that Begue's mission will also involve facilitating communication with all parties in the peace process, particularly Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and engaging with Arab partners to implement the Arab Peace Initiative.
The EU announced that Begue will assume his new position on June 2 for a duration of 12 months.
Begue served as France's ambassador to Israel from 2009 to 2013 and has held several diplomatic positions in France, the United Nations, and elsewhere.
The appointment coincided with rising anger among European leaders who threatened to take action against Israel if it does not halt its new military assault on Gaza and lift the restrictions it has imposed on the entry of aid to the region since early March.
A Swedish official stated that his country would ask the EU to impose sanctions on Israeli ministers.
