In a scene that redefines the meaning of citizenship, volunteering in the Kingdom has transformed from an individual activity into a national community culture, surpassing the targets of Vision 2030 ahead of schedule, painting the features of a vibrant society that accommodates everyone. Here, amidst the numbers, real stories pulse with the lives of individuals who have made their time a second home.
Every morning, in every Saudi city, thousands of people wake up not just to pursue their jobs but to offer a part of their time, effort, and expertise to those in need. This scene did not exist with such momentum a few years ago. Back then, volunteering was a series of scattered individual initiatives, often lacking direction on how to deliver them, document them, or turn them into a sustainable impact.
Then came Vision 2030, a vision that brings goodness and outlines a future of giving and prosperity, along with a radical shift in the perception of volunteer work. It is no longer merely a seasonal charitable act but has become a strategic pillar in building a vibrant community, a standalone economic sector, and a platform for building people before places.
The numbers speak clearly
The Kingdom, which had around 55,000 volunteers, has now surpassed 1.7 million volunteers, achieving the goal of Vision 2030 six years ahead of schedule. Volunteer hours have exceeded 59 million hours, with an economic value exceeding 1.2 billion riyals.
Behind these numbers, there are stories. There are real people. There are volunteers who have not stopped at the limits of duty but have created a homeland of giving for themselves. This report narrates some of their stories, listens to their voices, and observes how volunteering in the Kingdom has transformed from an individual act into a solid national culture.
When volunteering becomes a school
One day, in a neighborhood of Mecca, (Mervat Mahmoud Tayeb) sits in front of her screen. She is not writing news or managing a meeting. She is coordinating a new volunteering opportunity. For years, she has been diligently engaged in various purposeful volunteer activities.
She says: "I believe that volunteer work is a deep-rooted human and community value, due to its positive impact on building the individual and enhancing community cohesion."
This sentence, which Mervat often repeats, is not just a slogan; it is the essence of an extended experience spanning many years, which continues to this day through participation in initiatives and activities from various entities, especially non-profit organizations in Mecca, Jeddah, and Riyadh.
But Mervat's story is just one of thousands that contribute to this transformation. In every Saudi city, there are those who wake up every day to give their time to those in need, affirming that volunteering in the Kingdom is no longer a luxury but has become a necessity and a national culture.
From the many platforms and long lists of entities where Mervat has volunteered, she says: "They are not just names but milestones in a journey of learning and giving."
Mervat adds: "My volunteering practice has contributed to developing my skills in effective communication, teamwork, responsibility, and dealing with diverse groups and experiences, alongside enhancing my ability to initiate, commit, and participate in community service."
Now my horizons have expanded
Mervat continues, saying: "These participations have allowed me to contribute to serving beneficiaries and supporting community initiatives, while also enhancing my practical experience, broadening my horizons, and solidifying my values of initiative, cooperation, and commitment."
But the most important thing, as she says, is what she discovered: that the impact of volunteering is not limited to beneficiaries but also reflects on the volunteer themselves, granting them new experiences and a sense of achievement and belonging.
"I strive to motivate others, especially the youth, to embark on this experience. I believe that every effort, no matter how small, can make a real difference, and that volunteering is a community responsibility that contributes to building a more cooperative, interconnected, and sustainable society."
Volunteering at a young age
(Rasha Al-Ghafili) represents diverse volunteering, which began when she was 22 years old and has not stopped to this day.
Rasha says: "I engaged in volunteer work since I was 22 years old, participating in various fields and entities from both the public and non-profit sectors."
Rasha's participation varied across humanitarian, administrative, social, health, media, scientific research, and innovation fields. She has participated in several volunteer platforms.
This effort has not gone unrecognized; her volunteer journey has received several forms of recognition, as she was honored on Saudi World Volunteer Day in the Qassim region for 2024, and was recognized among the distinguished volunteers in the region for 2025. She received the Volunteer Pioneer Medal, in addition to being designated as an expert volunteer and receiving certificates of appreciation from the educational sector and various other entities.
However, Rasha did not stop at mere participation; she has contributed to spreading the culture of volunteering by writing articles about volunteer work and its impact, as well as about the efforts of the wise leadership and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
"My participation also included preparing strategic plans and initiatives for one of the entities when a volunteering opportunity arose, as well as my participation in the 'Al-Rass is More Beautiful' initiative."
Rasha concludes: "This journey comes from my belief that volunteering is a message of giving and a community responsibility, and one of the fields that contribute to serving the nation and society and enhancing the values of belonging, giving, and generosity."
Volunteering from the perspective of impact
(Ferial Al-Hassan) provides the analytical framework for impact; she does not just talk about her personal experience but analyzes how volunteering affects the individual and society.
Ferial says: "Volunteer work is meant to serve the community and build human connections based on cooperation, and it has a significant positive impact that reflects on both the individual and society."
Ferial has translated her words into reality. She volunteers in a volunteer team as part of her collaboration with some entities, offering workshops and various participations.
Ferial's story reflects another face of volunteering in the Kingdom: artistic and creative volunteering. Volunteering is no longer limited to traditional fields but has become a platform for artistic expression and documenting national identity through image and word.
From individuality to institutional work
Dr. Saud Al-Gharbi, founder of one of the volunteer-based associations, says: "Volunteer work has been one of the most important pillars upon which our association's experience was built since the beginning, which stands as a model for institutional transformation in volunteer work, where we have accomplished more than 300,000 volunteer hours, with the participation of hundreds of volunteers and those interested in the media and community fields. The experience has proven the ability of volunteer work to create an impact that transcends the boundaries of events and initiatives to build knowledge, raise awareness, and empower competencies."
Al-Gharbi concludes by saying: "We believe that the greatest thing non-profit institutions can offer is to open the way for individuals to contribute their knowledge, experience, and time to their nation and community, and for this giving to transform into a sustainable impact that remains after the initiative ends."
The national platform... the digital incubator for impact
In 2019, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development launched the national platform for volunteer work, to serve as the official reference for organizing volunteer work in the Kingdom.
The platform was not just a website but a comprehensive system that documents volunteer hours, issues accredited certificates, allows organizing entities to display opportunities, and provides training courses for individuals and institutions.
According to the latest statistics for 2025, the number of registered volunteers on the platform has exceeded 2.5 million volunteers, and the number of non-profit organizations has risen to more than 7,200 organizations.
