Saudi Arabia will participate next Monday in the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, hosted by the Republic of Mongolia from August 17 to 28, with the participation of the parties, international organizations, and relevant stakeholders. The Kingdom will also hand over the presidency of the conference to the Republic of Mongolia after a presidency period that witnessed the implementation of several initiatives and international partnerships that originated from the Riyadh Conference (COP16).
The Kingdom's participation in the conference comes as an extension of its leading role in supporting international efforts to address environmental challenges, as it showcases the most prominent international initiatives it has led during its presidency and the progress achieved in them, including the Riyadh Global Partnership for Drought Resistance (RGDRP), the Riyadh Action Agenda, which grew from 35 to more than 100 initiatives, and the international initiative for early warning of sand and dust storms, in addition to activating the Business for Land (Business4Land) initiative; alongside highlighting its efforts in environmental protection and natural resource management, enhancing vegetation cover, and adopting sustainable solutions to combat desertification, reflecting its commitment to supporting multilateral environmental action and achieving sustainable development goals.
The Kingdom hosted the 16th session of the convention in December 2024 in Riyadh, which was the largest in the history of the convention, with the participation of 197 parties (196 countries and the European Union), the adoption of 39 decisions, and the mobilization of more than $12 billion to support land restoration and drought resistance.
The conference represents an international platform to enhance cooperation between the parties, international organizations, and relevant entities, exchange experiences, and showcase successful practices in land management and restoration, and enhancing the sustainability of natural resources, supporting global efforts aimed at reducing the impacts of land degradation and drought, and strengthening partnerships aimed at building a more sustainable future.
The Kingdom will participate in the conference activities through a national pavilion in the blue zone that includes a comprehensive program with more than 40 side events, and a pavilion dedicated to the Green Middle East Initiative, while chairing the final meeting of the Conference of the Parties Bureau (COP Bureau) before handing over the presidency to Mongolia, and holding the second meeting of the steering committee and the first meeting of the partners' assembly for the Riyadh Global Partnership for Drought Resistance, continuing what it led in the "Dialogue of Optimism" regarding the global drought framework through meetings in Panama, Bonn, Cairo, and a ministerial meeting in Nairobi.
With this participation, the Kingdom concludes its presidency of the 16th session, after establishing a legacy of qualitative initiatives, effective partnerships, and executive mechanisms that contributed to translating the outcomes of the Riyadh Conference into practical steps on the ground.
The Kingdom also looks forward to continuing cooperation with all parties, ensuring ongoing progress towards achieving the goals of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, enhancing global efforts to restore lands, and building resilience against drought, based on the belief that collective action is the cornerstone of addressing global environmental challenges.
