علّقت كندا مؤقتاً بعض الرسوم الجمركية المضادة التي فرضتها على الولايات المتحدة، ونفى وزير المال فرنسوا فيليب شامبان، يوم الأحد، تقارير تحدثت عن رفعها كاملة.
وفرضت حكومة رئيس الوزراء الكندي مارك كارني رسوماً جمركية مضادة على واردات بمليارات الدولارات من الولايات المتحدة؛ رداً على الرسوم الجمركية الأمريكية على السلع الكندية.
وانتخب كارني في 28 أبريل الماضي على خلفية تعهده بمواجهة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب.
وخلال الحملة الانتخابية، مُنحت شركات صناعة السيارات مهلة، شرط أن تحافظ على إنتاجها واستثماراتها في كندا.
ورد ذلك في 7 مايو الجاري في الجريدة الرسمية للحكومة «كندا غازيت»، إلى جانب تعليق الرسوم الجمركية على المنتجات المستخدمة في معالجة وتغليف الأغذية والمشروبات، والصحة، والتصنيع، والأمن القومي، والسلامة العامة.
وذكرت مؤسسة «أكسفورد إيكونوميكس»، في تقرير هذا الأسبوع، أن الإعفاءات شملت العديد من فئات المنتجات لدرجة أن نسبة الرسوم الجمركية على الولايات المتحدة انخفضت فعلياً إلى نحو الصفر.
واستند زعيم المعارضة بيار بوالييفر إلى هذا التقرير الذي تناقلته وسائل إعلام على نطاق واسع، لاتهام كارني بخفض الرسوم الجمركية الانتقامية بهدوء إلى نحو الصفر من دون إخبار أحد.
ونفى شامبان صحة ذلك. وقال على منصة «إكس» رداً على الرسوم الجمركية الأمريكية: أطلقت كندا أكبر رد على الإطلاق، يشمل فرض رسوم جمركية بقيمة 60 مليار دولار على سلع للاستخدام النهائي، ولا يزال 70% من هذه الرسوم سارياً.

Canada has temporarily suspended some of the countervailing tariffs it imposed on the United States, and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne denied reports on Sunday that they were being lifted entirely.
The government of Prime Minister Mark Carney imposed countervailing tariffs on billions of dollars worth of imports from the United States in response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.
Carney was elected on April 28, following his pledge to confront U.S. President Donald Trump.
During the election campaign, auto manufacturers were given a grace period, provided they maintained their production and investments in Canada.
This was reported on May 7 in the government's official publication "Canada Gazette," along with the suspension of tariffs on products used in food and beverage processing and packaging, health, manufacturing, national security, and public safety.
The Oxford Economics Institute stated in a report this week that the exemptions included many product categories to the extent that the tariff rate on the United States has effectively dropped to nearly zero.
Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre relied on this widely circulated report to accuse Carney of quietly reducing retaliatory tariffs to nearly zero without informing anyone.
Champagne denied this claim. He stated on the platform "X" in response to the U.S. tariffs: Canada launched the largest response ever, including imposing tariffs worth $60 billion on final goods, and 70% of these tariffs are still in effect.
