The Syrian artist Madiha Knaifati revealed her thoughts on retiring from art due to the psychological pressures she faces.
Retirement and Pressures
She said during her appearance on the podcast "Boh": "I am not currently thinking about stepping away from acting, but the idea of retirement crosses my mind from time to time due to the psychological pressures I am subjected to," pointing out that the decision to stop working, if made at any stage, would be a personal decision stemming from her own desire, and not in response to pressures or desires from anyone else.
She clarified that she sometimes thinks about retirement, but she has not made up her mind or reached the stage of making and implementing a decision, emphasizing that she would not abandon her profession for marriage or to please a potential partner, as the decision to retire should come solely from her personal conviction.
Marriage and Commitment
In discussing commitment, Knaifati revealed that she prefers her life partner to be from outside the artistic community, explaining that this preference is not based on a negative stance towards artists, but rather on her desire to separate her professional and personal life, and to distance herself from the work environment and its problems while at home. She indicated that she does not like home conversations to turn into extensions of discussions related to filming and professional disputes, and she believes that being with someone who works in a different field could provide them both with a space that is especially free from the details of the profession and the pressures associated with it.
Despite her preference for this type of relationship, Knaifati has not closed the door on other possibilities, explaining that fate may impose different circumstances that cannot be predicted or predetermined.
Expulsion from the Institute
The Syrian artist touched on one of the difficult experiences she faced in her early career when she was expelled from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts during her second year of study, explaining that a disagreement occurred between her and her acting professor, Samer Imran, which ended with the decision to expel her.
Knaifati attributed part of what happened to her young age at the time and her lack of maturity to deal with professors and the situations she faced, affirming that she holds no grudges against her former professor.
She added that if she could return to that stage with her current experience, she would have handled the disagreement differently, and perhaps would have initiated a discussion with her professor instead of withdrawing.
She also felt that educational institutions specializing in the arts need to provide more support when dealing with young students, especially since some talents require guidance and the opportunity to shine, rather than losing them due to disagreements that can be managed and resolved.
Cliques in Art
Knaifati addressed the issue of cliques in the artistic community, explaining that they can sometimes contribute to the success of dramatic works, as the continued collaboration between the director and a group of actors helps each party understand the working style of the others, while also saving time and effort during the filming stages. She emphasized the importance of giving new faces opportunities to participate in artistic works, considering that renewing work teams allows series to present different perspectives and limits the repetition of the same names and experiences.
She expressed her desire to participate in any work that achieves success, even if she is not one of the usual names that a director collaborates with, indicating that opportunities for joint work may come at a later stage.
The Mirrors Experience
Knaifati recalled her experience in the series "Mirrors" with the artist and director Yasser Al-Azmeh, describing it as one of the important milestones in her early career, explaining that her participation in the work lasted about four years.
She praised Yasser Al-Azmeh's way of dealing with new talents and his commitment to giving them opportunities to appear and participate, noting that the series allowed her to present diverse characters through the separate sketches, in addition to gaining experiences that helped her develop her performance.
She also talked about her participation in the series "Soft Thorns," which coincided with the period when the audience began to recognize her, affirming that every work she participated in added to her artistic experience and provided her with a different experience.
Upcoming Works
Regarding her upcoming works, Madiha Knaifati confirmed that she is currently filming the series "A Family Doing Deeds," directed by Safwan Naamo, which combines both Syrian and Egyptian styles, and she appears in it as a guest.
She explained that the details of her participation have not yet been fully determined, as preparations for the work are still ongoing, expressing her enthusiasm for engaging in new artistic experiences that allow her to present different characters.
