توفي المغني الأمريكي سلاي ستون، قائد فرقة «سلاي آند ذا فاميلي ستون» عن عمر ناهز 82 عاماً، بعد معاناة طويلة مع مرض الانسداد الرئوي المزمن ومشكلات صحية أخرى، وفقاً لما أعلنته عائلته في بيان رسمي.
وأكدت عائلة أسطورة البوب والروك في بيانها أن ستون، واسمه الحقيقي سيلفستر ستيوارت، توفي بسلام محاطاً بأبنائه الثلاثة وصديقه المقرب وأفراد عائلته الممتدة.
ولد سلاي ستون في دينتون، تكساس، عام 1943، ونشأ في منطقة خليج سان فرانسيسكو، حيث بدأ مسيرته الموسيقية في سن مبكرة مع أشقائه في فرقة غنائية إنجيلية تُدعى «ستيوارت فور»، وفي منتصف الستينات عمل منسق أغنيات في إذاعة KSOL في سان فرانسيسكو، حيث قدم مزيجاً من موسيقى السول والبيتلز، ما أسهم في تشكيل رؤيته الموسيقية الفريدة.
وفي عام 1966، أسس فرقة «سلاي آند ذا فاميلي ستون»، التي ضمت شقيقيه فريدي وروز، إلى جانب أعضاء آخرين من خلفيات عرقية متنوعة، لتصبح أول فرقة روك أمريكية كبرى تجمع بين الرجال والنساء من ذوي البشرة السمراء والبيضاء.

The American singer Sly Stone, leader of the band "Sly and the Family Stone," passed away at the age of 82 after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other health issues, according to a statement released by his family.
The family of the pop and rock legend confirmed in their statement that Stone, whose real name was Sylvester Stewart, died peacefully surrounded by his three children, a close friend, and extended family members.
Sly Stone was born in Denton, Texas, in 1943 and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he began his musical career at an early age with his siblings in a gospel group called "Stewart Four." In the mid-1960s, he worked as a song coordinator at KSOL radio in San Francisco, where he presented a mix of soul music and the Beatles, contributing to the formation of his unique musical vision.
In 1966, he founded the band "Sly and the Family Stone," which included his siblings Freddie and Rose, along with other members from diverse ethnic backgrounds, becoming the first major American rock band to combine men and women of both black and white descent.
The band became famous for its songs that changed the landscape of music in the 1960s and 1970s, such as "Dance to the Music," "Everyday People," and "Family Affair," which topped the Billboard charts. The album "There’s a Riot Goin’ On" (1971) was a turning point in funk music, reflecting a deep social commentary on civil rights issues and disillusionment in the 1960s.
Despite his successes, Stone struggled with drug addiction, which affected the band's career and led to its gradual disbandment in the mid-1970s. He returned to the spotlight intermittently, including a performance at the Grammy Awards in 2006, but remained out of the public eye in recent years due to declining health. In 2023, he released his memoir titled "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" and completed a screenplay for a film about his life, according to his family's statement.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which claimed Stone's life, causes shortness of breath and deterioration of lung function, and is the fourth leading cause of death globally, resulting in approximately 3.5 million deaths in 2021. Its symptoms include chronic cough, phlegm, and difficulty breathing, which Stone suffered from for many years.
The family praised Stone's musical legacy, stating, "While we mourn his absence, we find comfort in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to inspire future generations." Stone's music has influenced many hip-hop and funk artists, and his songs are still used as samples in contemporary works.
