It is not easy for me to write about my brother Abdulrahman (Abu Abdullah), nor is it easy to comprehend his departure. When an older brother leaves, we do not just lose a dear person, but I lose a part of my history, as the years of life coincided, childhood memories intertwined, the vitality of youth grew, and various life experiences connected.
Today, as I am in my sixty-first year, I bid farewell to my brother Abdulrahman, who passed away at the age of seventy-one. It was a long decade of life, countless moments and memories, and many stations in life where he was present as an older brother and a support for the spirit, never hesitating to stand by his brothers and sisters.
Since our father's passing more than thirty years ago, my brother (Abu Abdullah) took on a significant role in our family. After our father's departure, he became a pillar for everyone, shouldering the responsibility of being the older brother with all that it entails in terms of giving, embracing, and care. This was not merely a role imposed by age or status, but a sincere expression of his love for us and his sense of responsibility towards his siblings and family.
He was a big brother and generous in every sense of the word. He did not fall short with me or my siblings in anything, and he was always keen on us, close to us, never absent from our affairs, and he did not hesitate to offer whatever he could or to stand by us. His actions were the truest expression of his love, and his giving was extended without waiting for a reward or thanks.
Perhaps what pains me the most today is that I am not just bidding farewell to a brother, but to a fatherly figure with whom I lived for sixty-one years of my life, who shared with me a long journey of memories and experiences. I bid farewell to someone who was present in the details of our lives, someone we were accustomed to finding among us, and whose presence instilled a sense of reassurance and safety within our family circle.
The stages of brotherhood with Abdulrahman taught me that being an older brother is not just a difference in age, but it is a responsibility, love, and loyalty. True brotherhood is not measured by words but by actions, and it does not only manifest in times of prosperity but is evident in caring for brothers and sisters, standing by them, uniting the family, and maintaining its bonds no matter how the years pass and life circumstances change.
I believe that one of the greatest legacies a person can leave after their departure is a good reputation and a beautiful impact on the souls of those who lived with them. My brother Abdulrahman left us that and more; he left us with steadfast love, cherished memories, generous moments, and a true lesson in what it means to be a brother and a support.
Abu Abdullah, you were for us, after our father, an extension of support and giving. You were a brother whom time did not spare in love, and we did not spare you our gratitude and appreciation. Today, as we bid you farewell, we feel the magnitude of the void you left, but we draw comfort from the sweet days we lived with you, from the good memories and praises from all who attended your condolences, and from our certainty that the moments, support, and assistance you provided will remain present in our hearts and souls.
Perhaps the greatest tribute to you is that we maintain what you cared about all these years: to remain loving, united, and connected brothers, to preserve our family's unity, to continue our kinship, and to instill in our children the meaning of brotherhood that you embodied in your life.
May God have mercy on you, my brother Abdulrahman, O Abu Abdullah. You have left our world, but you will remain present in our memories and hearts. You will always be my older brother, my lifelong companion, and the support of the years that time will not erase.
O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him health, pardon him, honor his resting place, widen his entrance, and make what he has done of good and giving weigh in his favor. Gather us with him in the abode of Your mercy and the gardens of bliss, along with our parents, our parents' parents, and all deceased Muslims.
You have departed, O Abu Abdullah, but brotherhood does not end with departure, love is not diminished by death, and memories are not erased by time. You will remain my brother and support in the memory of my life, and your brotherhood will remain a debt of loyalty that I carry as long as I live.
Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we shall return.
