Between prohibition and giving lies a divine wisdom; it involves warding off calamity, testing the self, and refining the soul. Just as giving is a reward that is earned, a goal of desires, and a fulfillment of demands; prohibition is not always a punishment, but rather a protection from hidden harm, or a guidance towards a better path.
The essence of contentment and submission is summarized in the saying of Ata' Allah al-Sakandari: "Whenever God grants a servant the understanding of the secret of prohibition, he knows that deprivation of what he desires is the pinnacle of giving that protects him from an evil that may be brought upon him by that thing."
Regarding the warding off of evil from the servant; Al-Hasan al-Basri says: "Do not dislike the calamities that occur, and the afflictions that happen; for perhaps there is a matter you dislike in which your salvation lies, and perhaps there is a matter you hope for in which your ruin lies."
Among the greatest of these wisdoms is trial and testing; as illustrated in the story of Al-Khidr and the boy he killed, fearing that his love for his parents would lead them to follow him in disbelief, resulting in their destruction: ﴿And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would oppress them by transgression and disbelief * So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy﴾.
Thus, God's decree for the believer in what he dislikes is better for him than His decree in what he loves; for prohibition is a means to test the servant's patience and satisfaction with what God has apportioned, to reveal the sincerity of his faith and submission to God's decree and destiny.
Indeed, God, the Exalted and Almighty, knows what we do not know, and sees what we do not see. Part of good faith is for a person to trust in God's wisdom, to be content with His decree and destiny, and to know that the good lies in what God has chosen for him. Everything that God decrees for His believing servants carries within it mercy and wisdom, whether that is apparent immediately or after some time.
Finally
If God closes a door in your face, do not despair; for there may be goodness behind that closed door that you cannot see now, and there will come a day when you realize that prohibition was the most beautiful form of giving. Not everything we lose is a loss, and not everything we gain is a profit.
