Crises and hardships have great benefits, even if their appearance suggests otherwise; they give us a clearer vision and reveal what is hidden during times of prosperity.
How many situations we thought were loyalty, only to find they were self-interest, and how many friendships we felt secure in, only to discover they were mere words waiting for the first test to change.
In times of prosperity, it is easy for everyone to be friends. Words of love are spoken, slogans of brotherhood are raised, and gatherings are filled with words of appreciation. But hardship asks one question: Where do the owners of these words stand when the situation has a price?
Here begins the sorting process.
To begin with, for Saudi Arabia and the Saudis, from them and to them: this land, if its water dries, our blood is its water, and if the heat intensifies, we sacrifice our souls for it. This is a statement supported by evidence; in those who preceded us to the honor of sacrifice, in the pride of their families, and in a people who know their place when their homeland calls them. A fabric whose strength is revealed by hardships, no matter how much transient malice on social media tries to portray it otherwise.
As for outside this fabric, hardships have another function: to put positions under the spotlight.
It becomes clear who loves Saudi Arabia and who loves what it provides; who remembers the good deeds, and who considers them an acquired right and then turns against their benefactor; who disagrees with it and postpones their disagreement to remain fair, and who waits for a fleeting disagreement to unleash buried hatred.
This is some of the good that crises bring; they save us years of the mirage that the thirsty thinks is water, and grant us knowledge that years of calm relationships may not provide. The chameleon can skillfully choose their words for a long time, but the difficult situation constricts their space for representation to the point of suffocation.
Saudi Arabia has never offered goodness to wait for a response, nor extended its hand in generosity to buy anyone's love.
Its emblem inspires the meaning: a palm tree extending its goodness, and two swords safeguarding its security and dignity.
However, this does not negate its right to read situations, nor does it make the denial of good deeds something that passes without significance. Generosity reveals the true nature of its owner, and the stance towards it reveals the true nature of its recipient.
And whoever takes neutrality as a veil when a clear stance is required, reveals their own limits of friendship.
There are moments when ambiguity becomes an answer, and evasion becomes a stance, even if its owner strives to call it wisdom.
Therefore, in hardships, there is goodness for the Kingdom, its leadership, and its people; the goodness of knowledge, clarity of vision, and placing trust where it belongs. We know who deserves to be close, and who should have their relationship with us reassessed.
And I recall here two beautiful lines by Al-Shafi'i:
May God reward hardships with all good... Even if they choke me with my own saliva
And my gratitude to them is not praise, but... I have recognized my enemy from my friend through them
Crises sort... and Saudi Arabia is eternal.
