At the end of a heavy night, I emerged from the intensive care unit, exhausted by what had drained all the hospitals with the event. A night when the bells did not quiet, and the feet did not rest; injuries kept coming, beds filled up, and hands did not stop working. Fatigue had reached its peak within me, dragging my steps down the corridor as I thought that this night had taken the most it could from us. Then I passed by the blood bank... and the scene brought my spirit back all at once.
I saw rows of people. Young men and women from this great Saudi nation, and residents who have lived on this land and loved it like its own people, standing in a quiet line, asking for nothing, but coming to give. They came to extend their arms willingly, so their blood would flow into bags that would tomorrow run through the veins of an injured person they do not know, and will never know, and they do not expect thanks in return. I stood for a moment, astonished: this is the homeland when it is tested. It is not a slogan raised, nor a word spoken, but blood given.
I contemplated their faces. They bore the fatigue of sleeplessness, but there was also a light that could not be missed; a light from those who know that, at this very moment, they are doing something greater than themselves. They were not driven by an announcement or an order, but by something deeper: that this is their country, and that the injured person lying in the emergency room is a brother to them, even if they are not related, and that a wounded homeland can only be healed by its children. I saw a girl coming out with a small cotton ball stuck to her arm, smiling with the smile of someone who has fulfilled their duty, and I saw a young man waiting for his turn while checking on those before him. A simple scene on the surface, but in its essence, it is a picture of a nation that knows who it is.
At that moment, I recalled an image that does not fade from the memory of this nation: the image of my esteemed leader extending his arm, donating his blood, among his people, not above them. How great is the leader who does not just give orders, but leads the line himself! When the people see their leader giving his blood as they do, they realize that leadership here is not a position above, but a giving that comes down to the people and mingles with them. That image alone has taught generations that a homeland is built by example before words, and that the noblest thing one can offer to the land is to water it with their blood. Therefore, I was not surprised by what I saw; for the people who see their leader donate, rush to follow his example.
This is the Saudi Arabia I know, and of which I am honored to serve its patients. It is not just a land we inhabit, but a mother of whom we are her children; when she is afflicted, her children rise from every direction. On the night when the hospitals were overwhelmed, the people did not wait for anyone; they did not say, "Where is the state?" or "Where are others?" but rather said through their actions: We are the state, we are the homeland, and this is our blood as a sacrifice for our land and our people. What pride this is, and what a people this is that sees giving their blood as an honor, not a favor!
I left the blood bank with everything inside me changed. Fatigue was no longer fatigue, nor was the night a lost night. What is the value of my little sleeplessness in the face of this great giving? We in the hospitals treat bodies, but those standing in line were treating something greater: they were healing the homeland by proving that it is still alive in the hearts of its children, pulsing as their veins do.
To everyone who stood in that line, extended their arm, and gave without expecting anything in return: you are not just donating blood, but you are writing with your hands the meaning of belonging. And to every Saudi and resident who loves this land: know that in every drop you give, a life is saved, and a homeland becomes stronger and more resilient. For this land that has given us security, livelihood, and dignity, deserves that we repay its kindness, even with our blood.
I entered that corridor exhausted, and came out proud. Proud of a people that cannot be defeated, of a leadership that leads the ranks, and of a homeland that, whenever the nights grow harsh, its children gather around it even more. The night will pass, the wounds will heal, and everything will return to its course. But that image - the rows of those standing giving their blood for their homeland - will remain etched in my memory, a testament that this homeland, as long as it has people like these, will never be defeated.
O Allah, protect this dear homeland, and safeguard its king and crown prince, and guide their steps for the good of the country and its people. O Allah, protect our brave soldiers who watch over our security, make their feet steadfast, and grant them a glorious victory. O Allah, protect its noble people, and maintain security, safety, and dignity on this land, and make it a haven of goodness and peace for as long as time endures. Amen.
