Old Jeddah with its history, modern in its contemporaneity, beautiful in its diversity, rich in its meanings. A city that has preserved its environment's uniqueness, just as the geography of the place has maintained its identity. To the west, it touches a coral purple beach alive with life, because the sea here is not just water, but reefs teeming with existence. To the east, mountains steeped in lofty history, as if they are guardians of identity, steadfast since time immemorial. Its location has granted it essence.
Jeddah the state, not just Jeddah the city. Jeddah is not in its buildings, but in its relationship with the sea and land, and in being the gateway to the two holy mosques that has made it a landing place for cultures and civilizations. An ancient city with the aroma of trade and journeys, modern in a way that does not erase its history. Beautiful in its contradictions, because contradiction here is richness, not dispersion.
The people of Jeddah are an extension of their place: like the sea, they are open, knowing no stagnation, mastering the art of hospitality as if it were instinct. And like the mountains, they are authentic, carrying in their dialect the warmth of the past, and in their proverbs the wisdom of ancestors. Jeddah is not a city inhabited by people, but people who create the city. You find them in their old alleys, telling stories that never die. And in their modern cafes, they blend authenticity with modernity with a remarkable ease. In their night market, where sellers and customers speak a language understood by the heart before the ear.
What distinguishes the people of Jeddah is that they narrate the city through their presence. Their generosity is not affectation, but a trait. Their humorous spirit is not an escape, but a confrontation with life with a smile. The diversity of their origins has made them a living mosaic, each piece carrying a color, yet together forming a single painting. Jeddah is not a place, but a community that breathes. When the city becomes a mirror for its people, and its people a mirror for it, the place blends with the soul and warmth.
The gateway to the two holy mosques has been significant since Caliph Uthman ibn Affan ordered in 26 AH (647 AD) to turn Jeddah into an official port for Mecca, making the city the main passage for pilgrims arriving by sea, a role that has continued through the ages to this day. Thus, Jeddah has maintained its role through its geography.
Its wall is another fabric that preserves Jeddah and its people, dating back to the era of the Mamluk Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri, who built a wall around Jeddah to protect it and the Muslim pilgrims from attacks by the Portuguese. It included several towers and gates, and part of it remains restored to welcome visitors at the entrance of historic Jeddah. A witness to history, events, and endless stories.
Its markets tell a long story: Souq Al-Alawi, Souq Al-Nada, Souq Al-Khasakiyah, Souq Al-Bedou, Souq Qabil. Each market has its own tale, distinction, and diversity. Its markets confirm that Jeddah was a major meeting point for traders arriving through its port with their counterparts in the kingdom. This reflects the extended commercial spirit, where the squares transformed into spaces for economic and cultural exchange simultaneously.
When Jeddah is asked: "Who are you?" it does not answer with its name, but opens its arms and says: "Come, see, smell, and listen."
