There is a very short phrase, but it weighs heavily on the tongues of some people: "So-and-so has a favor upon me!"
I don't know why some people are afraid of this phrase. Do they think that acknowledging the favors of others will deduct from their bank balance? Or lower their social status? Or take away some of their intelligence and deposit it into the account of the one who has done them a favor?
Some of those we have known can talk for three hours about themselves, their struggles, their successes, and their exceptional genius that humanity has not seen since the invention of the wheel, but when you ask them: Who helped you? They suddenly suffer from memory loss! As if they woke up one morning to find all the doors of life wide open before them.
The truth that these people do not like to hear is that no one makes themselves alone. Behind every successful person are individuals whose names people may not know, and it is honorable to remember these. Acknowledging the favors of others does not diminish a person; rather, it reveals their confidence in themselves. Only a shaky person imagines that praising others is an insult to them, and that acknowledging the intelligence of a competitor is an admission of their own ignorance, and that praising someone else's success means declaring their personal bankruptcy!
That is why I love the person who simply says: So-and-so is better than me in this matter.
This phrase is only said by someone who is confident. Even more beautiful is to remember people's favors even after a dispute.
You may have a friend who stood by you for ten years, and then you disagreed in the eleventh year. Here the true character of a person shows; do they erase ten years of beautiful moments because of one disagreement? Do they rewrite history to convince themselves and others that that person never did anything for them? Unfortunately, some do that. If they love someone, they turn them into an angel, and if they disagree with them, they suddenly discover that they are a devil, and this is not fairness, but emotional immaturity.
The generous man says: We disagreed, and perhaps we will not be friends again, but he has a favor upon me that I do not deny. In fact, true fairness goes beyond friends to adversaries. Your opponent may be intelligent, so say he is intelligent. Your competitor may be successful, so acknowledge his success. And the one you disagree with may have a noble stance, so testify to that. And believe me, it will not diminish your crown!
Great people do not need to belittle others to appear great.
Life has taught me that some favors do not come in bags of money, nor in measurable services. Sometimes a person changes your life with a word. And perhaps your future was shaped by a man who recommended you for an opportunity and then forgot all about it, while you did not forget him.
And sometimes even those who closed doors in our faces had a favor of another kind; they forced us to search for better doors.
That is why I am astonished by the person who reaches a high place and then kicks away the ladder they climbed. Even worse is the one who stands at the top and shouts: I got here alone!
No, my dear. We all climbed on the shoulders of situations, people, and experiences. And if you search well in your success story, you will find many fingerprints other than your own.
Therefore, do not postpone your thanks, do not be stingy with your acknowledgment, and do not wait for the death of those who have done you favors to write poems of loyalty about them, publish their old pictures, and tell people how great they were. Say it to them while they are alive. Tell your teacher: I learned from you. And to your friend: You stood by me. And to the one who opened a door for you: I will not forget your kindness. And even to the one you disagreed with: We disagreed, but your favor is preserved.
For preserving kindness is not weakness, and acknowledging favors does not lower your status. When you say about a person: "He has a favor upon me," you are telling us more about your own morals.
Finally, I say to everyone who has read my words: "Even you have a favor upon me."
