When I read the numbers and indicators for any business or project, I honestly do not care about the number as a large figure, but rather as a product that can be utilized and activated; especially since some numbers carry more than their mathematical value, encapsulating a complete story about a new direction, a silent transformation, and a future whose features are being shaped before we reach it. Therefore, I was struck by the CEO of Tuwaiq Academy, Engineer Abdulaziz Al-Hamadi, when he said that more than 2,500 students graduated in the field of advanced technologies, to lead the digital economy of the Kingdom in the coming years. I do not dwell long on the number as much as I focus on the phrase that follows: "to lead the digital economy."
The difference is significant between training our children to use technology and preparing them to create and lead technology. Today, the shape of the economy has changed just as the world around us has changed; wealth is no longer measured solely by the resources we possess, and the value of countries is no longer tied only to the size of their factories and markets. There is another wealth that is more hidden but far more impactful: knowledge, data, innovation, and the ability to turn ideas into value.
Thus, the digital economy comes as more than just a modern term that is repeated in conferences, reports, and business meetings; it is the new form of the economy, where technology intertwines with all aspects of our lives and sectors, from education and health to industry and commerce, from government services to tourism and media, until digital skills have become one of the tools of production, and programmers, developers, and innovators have become partners in creating economic value, not just employees in the tech sector.
Therefore, investing in our youth as soon as they learn artificial intelligence, programming, cybersecurity, or other advanced technologies is not just an investment in a future job, but an investment in a national capacity to create what the future will need. Herein lies the importance of what is happening today; we do not want children who can only use applications created by others, but we want minds that can ask: What can we create? What can we develop? And what problem can we turn into an opportunity?
The economy that buys technology remains a consumer of it, while the economy that creates, develops, and exports it possesses part of its future. Perhaps for this reason, the true value is not just in the number of graduates, but in the impact they will make after graduation; in the companies they may establish, the products they may develop, the solutions they may provide, the jobs they may create, and the markets they may open.
Ultimately, it is a simple equation: every new technical skill is a potential economic opportunity, and every mind that learns how to create solutions can one day become part of the solutions that the nation needs. Therefore, when we look at the graduates of Tuwaiq Academy, and others from our sons and daughters who are heading towards advanced technology fields, we should not see them merely as a new batch of graduates, but as a generation standing on the threshold of a different economy; an economy where ideas are capital, knowledge is value, innovation is competition, and humans are the most important infrastructure.
In conclusion, if oil has formed an important part of the story of the Saudi economy for decades, then the story of the future may be written in another language; a language that is not extracted from the depths of the earth, but from the minds of our sons and daughters. The future does not wait for us; we are the ones preparing ourselves for it, and the more new skills we acquire, the closer we get to an economy that does not just aim to be present in the future, but participates in its creation.
