I put myself in the shoes of the owner of a Saudi falconry farm who enters the international auction for falcon production farms, with local producers on his right and producers from countries with long-standing experiences in falcon production on his left. There is no room for flattery here; the falcon is in front of the buyer, the specifications are of high quality, and the price is determined by competition, with the result clearly visible upon completion of the sale.
Therefore, I see that one of the most important stories of the auction does not exist on the auction platform itself, but rather within the Saudi production farms that have found an open market in recent years through which they can test the quality of their production against competitors from different parts of the world.
In the 2025 auction, 19 Saudi farms participated out of a total of 67 farms representing 23 countries, with the total number of participating farms increasing by 20% compared to the previous year, while the number of countries increased by 21%. This environment places the Saudi producer in real competition and allows the falconer to compare breeds, specifications, and prices in one place.
I see this competition as a gain for the Saudi farm before it is a challenge for it. A closed market may give the producer temporary comfort, but it does not tell him much about his true position. However, when the farm presents its production alongside American, European, and Asian production farms, the comparison becomes daily and direct, and the buyer becomes the judge.
The producer emerges from this experience with knowledge that is no less valuable than sales; he learns which breeds are in higher demand, follows the specifications sought by falconers, observes how other farms present their production, and gets to know owners of different experiences. He then returns to his farm with a clearer picture of what the next production cycle needs.
In recent years, Saudi models have emerged that have increased their participation or succeeded in selling their displayed production, with local-bred falcons reaching advanced positions in competitions, revealing the Saudi ability to compete when production quality meets breed selection and knowledge of falconer needs.
I also believe that the discussion about the falcon economy starts precisely from this point, as it is an activity that requires knowledge of breeds, veterinary care, nutrition, preparation, specialized hands, transportation, marketing, and relationships with buyers. Every falcon that reaches the sales platform is backed by a chain of work and expertise, and the value of this chain increases with the growth of the market.
The decision to allocate heats for the "fledgling" category in the malwah competitions for falcons sold through the auction gives a new dimension to the farm's production, as it also draws attention to the farm and the breed from which the falcon originated. This relationship between production, auction, and competition is very important in my opinion, as it transforms the farm's reputation from a narrative it tells about itself into a record that the falconer can follow. A farm that produces falcons that achieve advanced results will find the impact of that reflected in buyers' perceptions of its production in the future. Then we will know the true impact of the auction on the future of falcon production in the Kingdom.
