According to the General Authority for Statistics, the divorce rate among citizens increased by 0.8% in 2020 compared to 2019. A study revealed the catastrophic effects of divorce, showing that 80% of children in social observation homes for committing criminal offenses are the offspring of separated parents. There has been much discussion about the reasons for divorce, and as usual, women are often blamed for this phenomenon. However, Saudi studies have shown that the majority of divorce causes are attributed to men. The study by "Mohammed Al-Saif, King Saud University" found that polygamy is responsible for 55% of divorce cases in Saudi Arabia. The study by "Mohammed Al-Shayani" indicated that polygamy in informal marriages is a major cause of divorce. The various names for marriages in Saudi Arabia, such as "Misyar marriage," "Misar marriage," and "marriage with the intention of divorce," play a significant role in the rising divorce rates. Even when the wife does not seek divorce due to polygamy, the lack of justice and financial support in the treatment of the first wife forces her to divorce. "Misyar marriage is the biggest cause of AIDS infection in the Arab world" (Al-Arabiya, April 22, 2010). 97% of Saudi women infected with AIDS contracted it from their husbands (Al-Madina, December 9, 2012). Therefore, the greatest encouragement for divorce is the promotion of polygamy, while requiring monogamy serves as a protection against divorce. According to a statistic from the Ministry of Justice regarding the causes of divorce, the leading reasons are: mistreatment 80%, lack of responsibility 76%, husband's addiction 72%, parental interference 66%, excessive jealousy 63%, lack of financial support 48%, husband's absence from home 48%, and polygamy 44% (Human Development Center for Family Consulting). Young age emerged as a major factor contributing to high divorce rates (Yusuf Al-Harbi), along with living with parents. Regarding marriages of young girls, according to the study by "Nahla Al-Qur'an," the primary reason for their high divorce rates is "biological and physical reasons followed by social and psychological reasons," as the reproductive system of young girls has not fully developed, leading to severe physical harm due to marriage, which causes their high divorce rates. This was confirmed by an official report sent by the Saudi Minister of Health to the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission in response to the commission's inquiry about conducting examinations for child marriages. The medical report concluded that child marriages lead to serious medical harms threatening the life of the young wife and the fetuses, in addition to the psychological and social harms on the young wife and her children (Riyadh, February 5, 2009). The study by "Salwa Al-Khatib" identified the reasons for high divorce rates as "early marriage, traditional marriage methods that do not allow the couple to see each other, the changing perception of women about themselves without a corresponding change in society's view of them, and the main reasons for divorce from the perspective of Saudi men: differing temperaments, natural aversion, parental interference, and the age gap between spouses." The preference of men for marrying younger women is a major factor in increasing divorce rates. Other main reasons include "Hana Mubarak and Eissa Al-Rashidi": physical abuse, mental illnesses, personality differences resulting from superficial choices, "tribal traditions, and not allowing the couple to see each other before marriage." "Asma Al-Tuwaijri" mentioned "the disparity in economic levels between families and disagreements over the wife's salary, debts, and loans." "Huda Alam" noted "the low educational level of both spouses, low income, lack of compatibility, the husband's failure to fulfill his responsibilities and mistreatment, the wife giving birth to daughters, excessive jealousy, serious and incurable mental, psychological, and sexual diseases, addiction, the husband repeatedly committing legal violations, the absence of justice in polygamy, and the young age of the spouses." According to studies, it is not true that women's education is a cause of increased divorce; women with a university education have a 78% chance of their marriage lasting 20 years or more, while wives with secondary education or less have a 40% chance. Unfortunately, the prevailing discourse ignores the real reasons for high divorce rates and focuses on imaginary adversaries, blaming them for this phenomenon, such as feminism, cafes, and television series.
