At the same time that the world was following the developments of President Trump's plan to stop the war in Gaza, which would be a significant achievement if fully realized, the president was preoccupied with being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which he believed he deserved more than anyone else, based on his claim of having stopped eight wars. However, the prize went to Venezuelan political activist María Corina Machado, who Trump said had contacted him to say she accepted the award in his honor because he deserved it, after the White House had previously stated that the Nobel Committee "prioritizes politics over peace."
In fact, if we reviewed the most significant wars ongoing since President Trump took office, we would find them represented in two conflicts: the Russian-Ukrainian war and Israel's war on the Gaza Strip. The first is still ongoing despite a decrease in its intensity, while the latter has just begun its initial steps toward cessation amid severe complications. If we, as Arabs, focus on the Gaza war as an aggression against an Arab people, we would find that it was fundamentally not a war between two armies or two states, but rather a war waged by a heavily armed army of an occupying state against a territory inhabited by over two million civilian citizens. It is true that Hamas acted recklessly on October 7, 2023, but the Israeli response did not require two years of destruction, extermination, starvation, displacement, and siege. For two years, the United States has provided Israel with superior political and military support, and even after Trump entered the White House in January, the American position remained unchanged.
The strategic change that led Trump to lean toward stopping the war was the successful international diplomatic campaign led by the Kingdom, with Arab, Islamic, and international solidarity aimed at halting the Gaza war and recognizing the Palestinian state. The meetings of the United Nations General Assembly last September were a tremendous success in supporting Palestine and its state, and exposing the heinous crimes committed by Israel in Gaza. As a result, international public opinion shifted after the exposure of the lies in the Israeli narrative, and the sympathy of peoples and organizations began to align with the Palestinian cause. This dramatic change is what made Trump, or perhaps forced him, to propose his plan to stop the war in Gaza, as he could not confront the world and take a position contrary to the comprehensive international will.
True peace is the restoration of rights to their rightful owners and preventing war-thirsty individuals like Netanyahu from exercising their madness. If this is achieved, there may be a better opportunity for President Trump to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
