Alaska is the 49th state of the United States of America and was purchased from the Russian Empire in 1867. Its purchase is considered one of the most significant American deals that enabled the country to expand territorially on the American continent. The architect of the deal was then-Secretary of State William Seward, who viewed it as a strong transaction that would allow the United States to geographically extend itself. At the time, the deal was met with disdain from some American politicians, as Alaska appeared to everyone as a frozen land with no value. Opponents of the deal referred to it as Seward's Folly due to the extremely cold climate of the state.
Aside from the political, military, and strategic importance that Seward aimed to achieve by purchasing Alaska at that time, it later became evident that the state contained an enormous amount of natural resources, which made it occupy a distinctive economic position among the other American states despite its notably small population. This, in turn, led some Russians to feel regret over their relinquishment of this national wealth and its handover to the United States in such a manner.
Alaska returned to the forefront a few weeks ago during the summit between Presidents Trump and Putin, making it the focus of the world's attention, which was eagerly awaiting the results of this meeting and any decisions that might emerge to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. During President Putin's reception, the United States was keen to demonstrate its military strength by flying American warplanes and bombers in the sky, all within the sight and hearing of President Putin.
There is no doubt that during the recent American-Russian summit, some imagined it would yield tangible positive results and lead to a successful agreement to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, which is approaching its fourth year. The world was watching closely during the summit for what the outcomes would be, especially since this crisis has cast its shadows over the entire world and Europe in particular, in addition to the daily casualties from both sides and the destruction of infrastructure in both countries.
It seems that this summit was not aimed at actually finding a solution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis; rather, it was convened to reaffirm American dominance over all global affairs. The choice to hold the summit specifically in Alaska was one of the clearest indicators of the American desire to remind the world (and Russia) of the American success in controlling one of the most important and wealthiest states in the U.S. with abundant natural resources.
It is certain that Russia—before the outbreak of the war—did not believe that its military campaign would take years, especially given the disparity in military power between the two countries. However, the support of many European countries and the United States for Ukraine is what caused the war to last for years without Russia achieving its objectives. While Russia insists that it is indeed succeeding in seizing many of the disputed Ukrainian territories and annexing them, Ukraine is expanding its war against Russia and penetrating deep into Russian territory. Day by day, we find it announcing its strikes on sensitive Russian targets and declaring its victories over the Russians.
The continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian war has negatively impacted the global economy, particularly on global oil and gas sources. It seems that the economic sanctions imposed on Russia have not achieved their intended purpose, which has prolonged the crisis, witnessing numerous radical shifts between successive American administrations—from the full support of the previous Biden administration to the fluctuating stance of President Trump's administration.
It is clear that the American administration does not care about the unfortunate events occurring in the world. Perhaps this erratic American approach to handling hot global issues is the main reason for the continuation of these conflicts in this manner. From summit to summit and from negotiations to negotiations, the scope of wars expands and their intensity increases rather than being contained or reduced in their extent and consequences. This confirms to us that everyone is only looking out for their own interests and those of their people and country, without regard for the interests of other nations.
