With the announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron of France's decision to recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meeting in September, we are witnessing a very significant development in the course of the Palestinian issue. If the efforts made by the French president to persuade the British Prime Minister to take a similar decision succeed, it will mark a historic turning point for a chronic issue that centers around the core of the major problem in the Arab region. So far, 147 UN member states out of 193 have recognized Palestine, but France's recognition carries significant weight, and if Britain follows suit, the equation will change dramatically, placing Israel in front of a new reality regarding the Palestinian issue and its desired state.
It is natural to expect the Israeli reaction to France's decision, which has been expressed by Netanyahu and some extremist officials in his government, reaching the level of rudeness towards the French president. Israel is terrified by the increasing number of important parties recognizing the Palestinian state and condemning its horrific violations against the Palestinian people in general, and Gazans in particular, which have reached a level that no human conscience can tolerate. Additionally, its ongoing deliberate obstruction of peace initiatives has become evident to the world, and thus it has gradually lost the false justifications it used to rely on, finding itself in a moral confrontation with most societies and countries around the globe.
Well, what comes next? The dilemma will lie in the American position, which fully supports Israel without any considerations. President Trump commented on President Macron's decision with words that did not indicate approval, as if to say that Macron can decide what he wants, but America has another decision. It is expected that America will oppose the outcomes of the international conference on the future of the Palestinian issue, which will be held on July 28 and 29, followed by a summit of heads of state before the United Nations General Assembly in September, initiated by the Kingdom and France. In fact, it has opposed the initiative since its inception and has openly and implicitly threatened the countries that will participate in it. Therefore, we can say that the Palestinian issue and the State of Palestine stand between two camps: Israel and America on one side, and the rest of the world on the other, with one side striving to achieve it and the other working to abort it.
America speaks of a two-state solution in specific diplomatic contexts when it is beneficial for it in certain situations, but in practice, it exerts its weight to obstruct this long-awaited solution.
