The Belgian website Het Laatste Nieuws reported that Moroccan authorities have released drug baron Younes Belouti, nicknamed "El Magico," who is wanted by Belgian and American justice, after completing a one-year prison sentence in Casablanca for possession of forged travel documents.
“El Magico” was apprehended by Moroccan security in September while inside a café in Tangier with a fake passport, where he received an initial sentence of 5 years in prison, before the appeals court reduced the sentence to one year. Despite Belgian authorities' requests for his arrest to enforce absentee sentences exceeding 20 years for cocaine trafficking and money laundering within the notorious "Sky ECC" network, Moroccan law prohibits the extradition of citizens holding Moroccan nationality to foreign countries.
It is worth noting that Younes belongs to a prominent family of drug traffickers in Europe, as his brother, Othman Belouti, nicknamed "King of Cocaine," is one of the largest traffickers in Belgium. These developments come amid a wide international and American pursuit of the family, which included their names being placed on the sanctions list and asset freezing by the U.S. Treasury Department.
