The incidence of colds increases during the summer despite rising temperatures, and the sudden transition between different thermal environments is the primary factor behind this phenomenon. When a person moves from temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius to very cold enclosed spaces, the body experiences a rapid change that weakens the defenses of the mucous membranes in the nose and throat, making it easier for viruses to enter.
Some daily behaviors lead to the same result, such as consuming iced drinks in hot weather, swimming for long periods in cold water after exposure to high heat, or sitting directly in front of strong air conditioning; these factors can cause a drop in body temperature and reduce the respiratory system's ability to resist infections.
Although air conditioners are not a source of viruses, neglecting their maintenance can turn them into an environment for dust accumulation, allergens, and microorganisms, while the dry air they blow contributes to the drying of the mucous membranes, increasing susceptibility to respiratory infections.
Health experts indicate that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can strain the heart and blood vessels, negatively impacting the efficiency of the immune system, which raises the likelihood of contracting diseases and viral infections during the summer.
