كشفت السلطات الأمريكية في مقاطعة أورنج بولاية كاليفورنيا تفاصيل جديدة حول التسريب الكيميائي السام الذي أدى إلى إجلاء نحو 40 ألف شخص، محذرة من أن الوضع «غير مسبوق» وأن الخزان المعني لم يعد هناك سوى خيارين: إما أن يفشل ويسكب كميات كبيرة من المادة السامة، أو يدخل في «تفاعل حراري متسارع» وينفجر.
وقال مسؤولو إدارة الإطفاء في مقاطعة أورنج إن التسريب بدأ الخميس، في خزان بسعة 34 ألف غالون (حوالى 128 ألف لتر) يحتوي على مادة ميثيل ميثاكريلات، وهي مادة كيميائية شديدة الاشتعال والتطاير تستخدم في صناعة البلاستيك والراتنجات، وتُستخدم في تصنيع قطع الطائرات في منشأة GKN Aerospace بمدينة غاردن غروف.
وأوضح قائد فريق الاستجابة للمواد الخطرة، الضابط كريغ كوفي، أن الخزان بدأ في ارتفاع درجة حرارته، مما أدى إلى تسرب أبخرة، وأصبح صمام التحكم تالفاً، تاركاً خيارين فقط: الفشل وتسرب حوالى 6-7 آلاف غالون من المادة السامة، أو الانفجار الذي قد يؤثر على خزانات أخرى مجاورة.
بدأ الحادث مساء الخميس عندما سُجل ارتفاع حرارة الخزان وتسرب أبخرة، وعلى الفور أُصدرت أوامر إجلاء أولية ثم تم توسيعها الجمعة لتشمل أجزاء من ست مدن: غاردن غروف، سايبرس، ستانتون، أناهايم، بوينا بارك، وويستمنستر.
وأُغلقت أكثر من 12 مدرسة، وأُقيمت مراكز إيواء، وأُغلقت طرق رئيسية، لكن حتى الآن، لا توجد تقارير عن إصابات أو انفجار، ويُقال إن جودة الهواء مستقرة بعد تبريد الخزان بمياه الرشاشات.
وأكد المسؤولون أن آلاف السكان ما زالوا يرفضون مغادرة منازلهم رغم الأوامر الإلزامية، مما يثير قلق السلطات، وتستمر فرق الإطفاء والمواد الخطرة في محاولات التبريد لكسب الوقت.
ويُعد هذا الحادث أحد أكبر عمليات الإجلاء في تاريخ مقاطعة أورنج بسبب مخاطر كيميائية، ويثير مخاوف حول سلامة المنشآت الصناعية القريبة من المناطق السكنية.
The U.S. authorities in Orange County, California, have revealed new details about the toxic chemical leak that led to the evacuation of approximately 40,000 people, warning that the situation is "unprecedented" and that the affected tank now has only two options: either it fails and spills large amounts of the toxic substance, or it enters into an "accelerated thermal reaction" and explodes.
Officials from the Orange County Fire Department stated that the leak began on Thursday in a tank with a capacity of 34,000 gallons (about 128,000 liters) containing methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable and volatile chemical used in the production of plastics and resins, and is utilized in manufacturing aircraft parts at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove.
Hazardous materials response team leader, Officer Craig Coffey, explained that the tank began to heat up, leading to vapor leaks, and the control valve became damaged, leaving only two options: failure and the leakage of about 6-7 thousand gallons of the toxic substance, or an explosion that could affect other nearby tanks.
The incident began Thursday evening when a rise in the tank's temperature and vapor leaks were recorded, prompting initial evacuation orders that were expanded on Friday to include parts of six cities: Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster.
More than 12 schools were closed, shelters were established, and major roads were shut down, but so far, there are no reports of injuries or explosions, and air quality is said to be stable after the tank was cooled with sprinkler water.
Officials confirmed that thousands of residents are still refusing to leave their homes despite mandatory orders, raising concerns among authorities, while firefighting and hazardous materials teams continue cooling efforts to buy time.
This incident is one of the largest evacuations in Orange County's history due to chemical hazards, raising concerns about the safety of industrial facilities near residential areas.
