The President of the European Football Association (UEFA), Aleksander Čeferin, announced today (Thursday) his intention to run for a new four-year term.
Čeferin informed the presidents and secretaries general of the 55 national associations that are members of UEFA in Berlin today (Thursday) that he will run for one last term, reversing his previous decision to leave the position at the end of his current term.
Trust of the Associations
Čeferin, who was first elected in 2016, said: “I would like to thank the national associations for their trust. We have faced exceptional challenges over the past years, and we have tackled them as one team, and there is still important work ahead of us, which is why I accepted their request to run again.”
Loss of Confidence in FIFA Leadership
UEFA also announced today that all 55 national associations, except for Azerbaijan, supported proposals to reform the International Football Association (FIFA).
UEFA's statement read: “The national associations have once again confirmed that they have lost confidence in the current leadership of FIFA; institutional reform alone will not be sufficient.”
The statement continued: “FIFA also needs new leadership: a respected and unifying figure, with deep roots in football, possessing the vision and experience necessary for leadership, the ability to earn trust across all regions, and an unequivocal commitment to development, reform, integrity, and independence.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has faced sharp criticism from UEFA due to the proposed "FIFA Forward Enterprise" project, which involved selling stakes in a new entity affiliated with the association, valued at around $20 billion, before he officially retracted it and then announced his candidacy for a new term, despite ongoing pressures.
