Granite Xhaka, the captain of English club Sunderland and the Swiss national team, has announced a decision to fine him 150,000 Swiss francs, equivalent to about 180,000 dollars, with a suspended sentence, following his acquisition of a forged vaccination certificate against the coronavirus during the pandemic.
Suspended Fine
Xhaka, who is 34 years old, explained in a post on his Instagram account that the execution of the fine will remain suspended for two years, provided he does not commit any other violations during this period, confirming that he has already paid the legal costs associated with the case.
The Swiss player said: “I accept the decision and take responsibility for my actions,” expressing his appreciation for the messages of support he received over the past weeks, and confirming that they had a significant impact on him.
The case dates back to 2022, when Xhaka was a player for Arsenal, as he had previously spoken about his lack of trust in vaccines, noting that fears and uncertainty affected his stance at that time.
Required Certificate
Although there was no general legal obligation to obtain or keep a vaccination certificate, it was a requirement for accessing a number of activities and places, in addition to being used as part of travel requirements during the pandemic.
Absence from the Camp
Xhaka holds the record for the most international appearances for the Swiss national team, with 152 matches. However, he missed the national team's recent camp in preparation for the UEFA Nations League matches against Scotland, North Macedonia, and Slovenia, due to the forged vaccination certificate case.
