The White House spokesperson, Katie Zakaria, left her position just five days after taking on the role, in a development that followed remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump urging her to reconsider her continuation in the role, amid criticisms of her media performance and questions about her legal qualifications.
Two U.S. officials confirmed on Friday that Zakaria had left her position, while Reuters reported that the decision to let her go came after a tumultuous start in one of the most prominent media roles within the U.S. administration, which is responsible for conveying the president's positions and defending his policies to the press.
Trump: I'm not sure you'll be happy
Before the announcement of her departure, Trump spoke with reporters outside the White House, stating that he advised Zakaria to reconsider her continuation, after facing media criticism and pressure during her first days.
Trump said he told her, "If I were you, I would reconsider," adding that he wants her to be happy and that he is not sure she will find happiness in the nature of this job, which he described as difficult.
The U.S. president pointed out that Zakaria had faced, in his words, harsh treatment from the media, explaining that he informed her that she was not obligated to continue in the position if she did not wish to do so. His remarks came just hours before confirming her departure from her role.
Scrutiny of qualifications and performance criticisms
These developments followed a wave of questions regarding Zakaria's professional background, as she had previously presented herself as a lawyer, while reports showed that she had not passed the bar exam in California, which she acknowledged during an interview with Fox News.
Trump had described her as a lawyer when announcing her selection, while Zakaria clarified that she studied law and claimed to have engaged in work related to law and international transactions, defending the way she described her professional qualifications.
She also faced criticism following her first press briefing at the White House last Tuesday, as her performance and the way she presented her answers raised questions in media circles, before the criticisms continued during subsequent television interviews.
Quick departure from a prominent position
Zakaria took on the role following Caroline Levitt, who left the position last August, as part of the administration's efforts to enhance its media messaging and promote its achievements.
By leaving after just five days, Zakaria records one of the shortest tenures known for holders of the White House spokesperson position, at a time when the Trump administration faces the upcoming midterm elections for Congress, scheduled for next November.
According to published reports, Trump did not announce the name of Zakaria's successor, indicating that he is not in a hurry to choose a new spokesperson.
