The Palestinian Authority announced that there are substantial obstacles preventing the legislative elections, which were scheduled for the end of November, from taking place, leading to their postponement for several months.
Palestinian Deputy President Hussein al-Sheikh stated today, Friday, to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, that the elections will be postponed for several months due to the deterioration of the situation across the Palestinian territories, according to a message seen by Reuters. The message, dated October 8, indicated that "the assessment concluded that the expected political, security, and economic conditions, which were the basis for setting the date for the legislative elections on November 28, 2026, have not been met," clarifying that "conducting elections under the current circumstances faces substantial obstacles that affect their inclusiveness, the freedom of participation, and the integrity of the electoral process."
Palestinian Consensus on Postponement
Palestinian sources reported a consensus among Palestinian factions to adopt and implement the Popular Front's initiative according to specific mechanisms and a timeline, which includes postponing the legislative elections for a year and canceling the results of the electoral assemblies for the Palestinian National Council. This consensus came after a series of meetings held by the factions in Cairo, with the participation of a delegation from Fatah, alongside delegations from Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front. The sources mentioned that the Fatah delegation will raise the recommendations from the recent meetings to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for discussion in the Central Committee of the movement and the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, in preparation for recommending the issuance of a presidential decree in the coming days to postpone the elections for a year. According to the sources, Cairo will host, in the coming weeks, a comprehensive national dialogue at the invitation of Egypt, with the participation of Palestinian factions, aimed at ending the Palestinian division and achieving national unity.
Israeli Obstacles to Elections
A Palestinian official revealed that the Israeli government has refused to allow the Palestinian Central Elections Commission to enter the Gaza Strip and the city of Jerusalem to follow up on the preparations for the legislative elections, considering that the Israeli refusal would hinder the commission's work in two areas of the Palestinian territories.
It is noteworthy that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree last July setting November 28, 2026, as the date for the legislative elections, calling on voters in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza Strip to participate. The Central Elections Commission confirmed its readiness to carry out the electoral process, stating that its plan includes Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, in addition to the West Bank, and called on the international community to support the process and pressure to remove the obstacles that prevent it from performing its tasks in various Palestinian territories.
The last Palestinian legislative elections were held in 2006, and following their results, the dispute between the Fatah and Hamas movements deepened, before Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007, solidifying the state of political and geographical division among Palestinians.
