May Allah have mercy on the Saudi sports historian and member of the Okaz Foundation for Press and Publishing, Dr. Amin Sa'ati, who is considered one of the most prominent pioneers of sports documentation in the Kingdom and the first to publish a Saudi sports book titled "Al-Ittihad in History" in 1382 AH. He dedicated his life to documenting history and the sports movement through important works that serve as references for generations.
In reality, no matter how much we talk about Dr. Amin Sa'ati and recall his achievements, we will still fall short in honoring him. It is rare to find an exceptional personality who combines sports, media, and management. The years I spent with him at "Okaz" were not just a work relationship; he was a great mentor and guide for us as journalists due to his extensive journalistic, administrative, and professional experience. Our relationship with him was strengthened when he took on the supervision of the training department at "Okaz" three decades ago, especially regarding the internal training courses offered to employees at the newspaper's headquarters, given the presence of a qualified training center equipped with all necessary technologies. One of the beautiful advantages was that I was one of the journalists who attended the first training course launched under his supervision and follow-up, with the presence of specialized trainers. Our relationship with the late man deepened as he was keen throughout the course to personally follow up with each journalist, assess their training level, encourage them, and uplift their spirits until the course ended.
Our relationship with him was not merely that of a manager and an employee; he was, may Allah have mercy on him, open-hearted and a listener to everyone. He often corrected journalists' sports information, as he was a documentary reference and an encyclopedia of sports news. Here, I would like to share a beautiful story about Al-Ittihad when he asked me, "Who do you support?" I replied, "Al-Ittihad," and he smiled, saying, "May Allah help you." I then asked him, "Why, Doctor?" He responded beautifully, saying, "Al-Ittihad, O Muhammad, is a passion that resides in souls, spirits, and blood. This team, when it loses any match, leaves its supporter feeling frustrated and emotionally unstable, living in a cycle of gloom, and they might even go to bed without dinner. But when it wins, just imagine the joy and happiness it brings to hearts and the smiles it paints on the faces of Al-Ittihad fans."
The late man was also surprised when I told him that I used to play for Al-Ittihad in the youth team when the club was in the Al-Baghdadiyah neighborhood in Jeddah, and I was living in the Al-Sharafiyah neighborhood at that time. However, I did not continue with them because I received a severe blow to the head from one of the players in the eye and eyebrow area. Instead of hitting the ball correctly with his head, he hit me, and I returned home covered in blood. Due to the severity of the wound and shock, my mother took me to the hospital, where I received seven stitches in the eyebrow area. The doctor said, "Thank God, the blow did not reach the eye and was safe." After that, my family prohibited me from entering the club, but I continued to play football with the neighborhood youth.
In conclusion, may Allah have mercy on the dear deceased and grant him a spacious place in Paradise. My sincere condolences to his family and relatives, especially Professor Abdul Ilah Sa'ati, Dr. Nabeel, and all his righteous children. I ask Allah to envelop the deceased in His vast mercy.
