بعد 3 ساعات من المباحثات التي جرت في موسكو، اليوم (الأربعاء)، وصف الكرملين محادثات الرئيس الروسي فلاديمير بوتين والمبعوث الأمريكي ستيف ويتكوف بأنها «جيدة وبناءة». وأعلن أن الرئيس بوتين ناقش مع المبعوث ويتكوف نزاع أوكرانيا والشراكة الاستراتيجية بين البلدين.
فيما اكتفى رئيس الصندوق الروسي للاستثمارات المباشرة كيريل دميترييف بقوله إن «الحوار سينتصر». وكتب دميترييف بعد انتهاء الاجتماع، على حسابه في منصة «إكس»: «شكراً للجميع على تمنياتكم الطيبة بنجاح زيارة ستيف ويتكوف إلى موسكو. الحوار سينتصر».
ويأتي لقاء بوتين وويتكوف قبل يومين من المهلة المحددة لتوصل روسيا إلى اتفاق سلام مع أوكرانيا، والتي تنتهي (الجمعة)، وإلا قد تواجه عقوبات اقتصادية قاسية قد تتعرض لها أيضا دول تشتري النفط الروسي.
وقبيل وصول ويتكوف لموسكو، كشفت وكالة «بلومبرغ أن روسيا درست تقديم تنازلات للرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب بشأن أوكرانيا. ونقلت الوكالة عن مصدر مطلع بأن الكرملين يدرس تقديم تنازلات للولايات المتحدة، قد تشمل هدنة جوية مع أوكرانيا، حتى مع إصرار روسيا على مواصلة الحرب.
وكان المتحدث باسم الكرملين دميتري بيسكوف، استبق الزيارة وقال في تصريحات لوكالة «تاس» الروسية: «إن تحسين العلاقات بين روسيا والولايات المتحدة سيستغرق وقتا». ولفت إلى عدم اجتماع الرئيس الروسي فلاديمير بوتين ونظيره الأمريكي منذ فترة طويلة، بقوله «هناك بالطبع جمود في هذه العملية». وأضاف أن الأمر يتطلب وقتا لإعادة العلاقات الثنائية إلى مسارها الطبيعي.
وبالتزامن مع الزيارة، دعا الرئيس الأوكراني فلوديمير زيلينسكي، واشنطن إلى زيادة الضغط على روسيا لإجبارها على إنهاء الحرب المستعرة منذ 2022. وكتب زيلينسكي على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي: «من المهم للغاية تكثيف جميع أدوات الضغط التي تتمتع بها الولايات المتحدة وأوروبا ومجموعة السبع ضد روسيا». وأكد زيلينسكي أن الكرملين «لن يسعى فعليا إلى إنهاء الحرب إلا عندما يشعر بضغط كاف».
وشهدت العلاقات بين البلدين توترا متصاعدا في الأسابيع الماضية، إذ أمر ترمب بإرسال غواصتين نوويتين إلى منطقتين مناسبتين، ردا على تصريحات للرئيس الروسي السابق دميتري ميدفيديف.
ووجه ترمب إنذارا نهائيا إلى بوتين، مطالبا بوقف إطلاق النار في الحرب التي بدأتها روسيا بغزو شامل لأوكرانيا في فبراير 2022، وإبرام اتفاق سلام رسمي بحلول الثامن من أغسطس الجاري.
وهدد الرئيس الأمريكي الذي كان يثني على بوتين، بفرض عقوبات جديدة على روسيا ورسوم جمركية بنسبة 100 % على الدول التي تشتري نفطها، وأكبرها الصين والهند، ما لم يوافق على وقف إطلاق النار في أوكرانيا.

Meanwhile, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev, merely stated that "dialogue will prevail." Dmitriev wrote after the meeting on his account on the "X" platform: "Thank you all for your good wishes for Steve Witkoff's successful visit to Moscow. Dialogue will prevail."
The meeting between Putin and Witkoff comes two days before the deadline for Russia to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine, which ends on Friday, or else it may face severe economic sanctions that could also affect countries buying Russian oil.
Before Witkoff's arrival in Moscow, Bloomberg reported that Russia considered making concessions to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine. The agency cited an informed source stating that the Kremlin is contemplating concessions to the United States, which may include an air truce with Ukraine, even as Russia insists on continuing the war.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov anticipated the visit and stated in remarks to the Russian news agency TASS: "Improving relations between Russia and the United States will take time." He noted that President Vladimir Putin and his U.S. counterpart have not met for a long time, saying, "There is, of course, a stalemate in this process." He added that it will take time to return bilateral relations to their normal course.
Simultaneously with the visit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Washington to increase pressure on Russia to force it to end the war that has been raging since 2022. Zelensky wrote on social media: "It is extremely important to intensify all the pressure tools that the United States, Europe, and the G7 have against Russia." He emphasized that the Kremlin "will not genuinely seek to end the war until it feels sufficient pressure."
Relations between the two countries have seen escalating tensions in recent weeks, as Trump ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to appropriate regions in response to statements from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Trump issued an ultimatum to Putin, demanding a ceasefire in the war that Russia began with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and a formal peace agreement by August 8 of this year.
