The Prime Minister of Egypt, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, issued a decision to accept the resignation submitted by the Minister of Environment, Dr. Yasmin Fouad.

He also issued another decision assigning the Minister of Local Development, Dr. Manal Awad, to temporarily carry out the duties of the Minister of Environment, in addition to her own responsibilities, until a new Minister of Environment is appointed.

Last May, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of the Egyptian Minister of Environment, Yasmin Fouad, as the new Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. Yasmin has held the position of Minister of Environment in Egypt since 2018.

The appointment of Yasmin Fouad came after consultations with the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, succeeding Ibrahim Thiao (Mauritania), for whom the Secretary-General expressed deep gratitude for his dedicated service and outstanding commitment to the organization.

Yasmin Fouad is an expert in environmental diplomacy, with over 25 years of experience in environmental governance, global environmental issues, and international climate diplomacy, in addition to a strong record in designing and implementing institutional and regulatory reforms to achieve sustainable development.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that Minister Yasmin Fouad played a pivotal role globally in multilateral environmental processes, having served as the President of the Fourteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, and as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's envoy to the Twenty-Seventh Conference of the Parties, along with other prominent roles at both regional and international levels.

As a visiting researcher at Columbia University, Yasmin contributed to the Earth Institute, where she helped design the Center of Excellence for Climate Change Adaptation in Egypt. She holds a Ph.D. in Euro-Mediterranean Studies from Cairo University and a Master's degree in Environmental Sciences from Ain Shams University.
