The United Nations announced that nearly 4 million people have fled Sudan since the war began in April 2023, describing this number as "catastrophic."

The spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Eugenio Bion, reported today (Tuesday) that 4 million people have fled Sudan to neighboring countries since the war, which has entered its third year, confirming that it is a catastrophic milestone in the world's most severe displacement crisis. During a press conference in Geneva, she stated that the number reached this level (on Monday), warning that the scale of displacement threatens regional and global stability.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said that Sudan is experiencing "the worst humanitarian disaster in the world" while participating in a conference on governance and development in Africa held in Morocco yesterday (Monday).

Since April 2023, Sudan, the third-largest African country by area, has been witnessing a devastating war that has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of 13 million people, while some areas are suffering from famine, amid the worst humanitarian crisis in the world according to the United Nations.

Despite international warnings about the fighting in El Fasher, which is the center of humanitarian operations for all of Darfur, the city has been experiencing fighting since May 10 between army forces, supported by armed movements that signed a peace agreement in 2020, and the Rapid Support Forces.

Thousands of civilians have been killed, but the actual toll of deaths and victims of the conflict is not confirmed.

The war has pushed millions to the brink of famine and caused the largest displacement crisis in the world, igniting waves of "killings and sexual violence motivated by ethnicity" in the Darfur region of western Sudan.
