The fluctuations in the exchange rate of the dollar, known in commercial circles as "the green," have confused the plans of car companies and agents in Egypt to reduce vehicle prices, who were preparing about two weeks ago to launch new discounts as the American currency fell to around 49 pounds and geopolitical tensions eased.
The renewed escalation of U.S.-Iran tensions and the return of the dollar to rise above 51.30 pounds have led companies in the sector to suspend their re-pricing plans, amid increasing uncertainty about market trends in the coming period and their impact on import costs, according to what was published by Al Arabiya channel.
Confusion and Anticipation
Officials in the automotive manufacturers' association in Egypt agreed that recent developments have put the market in a state of anticipation and stagnation, significantly slowing demand levels despite the onset of summer, which is considered the peak season for car sales. They explained to "Al Arabiya Business" that concerns related to rising import costs and the difficulty of securing foreign currency, along with consumer anticipation, have led to a state of confusion in the car market.
The Main Factor
A member of the automotive division of the General Federation of Chambers of Commerce in Egypt, Montaser Zeitoun, stated: "The exchange rate of the dollar remains the main factor in determining car prices in the Egyptian market, as any movement in the currency's price reflects on companies' pricing decisions, whether to decrease or increase." Zeitoun added: "Some brands offered limited discounts during the period of dollar decline and easing tensions, but the continued rise of the American currency may push them to reconsider those discounts. Most car companies in Egypt have not actually reduced their prices, as they priced their vehicles based on high dollar levels, making the closest trend currently to maintain prices amid the ongoing state of anticipation in the market."
Geopolitical Developments
The head of the car dealers' association in Egypt, Osama Abu El-Majd, said: "Price trends in the coming period will remain largely linked to geopolitical developments and their impact on the exchange rate." He explained that the stability of the dollar may open the door for further price decreases, while its rise could lead to new pressures on prices. The Secretary-General of the Automotive Manufacturers Association in Egypt, Khaled Saad, stated: "Egyptian car companies do not reprice vehicles immediately with every change in the dollar's price, as they rely on import costs and the exchange rate based on which the currency was secured and the letters of credit for shipments were opened."
