- I am closely following the unfortunate practices witnessed on social media in some countries around the world, which have exceeded the limits of criticism and disagreement, reaching the point of insults, slander, and blatant interference in the privacy of others, revealing the secrets of their personal lives, in the absence of deterrent controls or weak enforcement of them. I thank God greatly for what the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing in terms of organization and legislation that contribute to limiting such transgressions and preserving the community's privacy and values.
- What is happening on some platforms has crossed all ethical boundaries and controls that impose respect for others and safeguard their private lives. No one has the right to appoint themselves as guardians of society or to grant themselves the authority to determine right and wrong according to their personal convictions, let alone to go beyond that to hold others accountable and defame them, simply because their actions do not align with their viewpoint or personal standards.
- There are systems, legislation, and specialized bodies responsible for identifying violations and holding their perpetrators accountable, and individuals do not have the right to replace them or exercise authority and oversight over society. The state is the one that establishes the regulatory frameworks, defines the limits of what is permissible and prohibited, and the relevant authorities are responsible for enforcing the regulations in a manner that preserves rights and prevents transgressions.
- The privacy of others is not a permissible subject for discussion, defamation, or settling scores, and the space should not be left open for those who believe that owning an account on social media grants them the right to invade people's lives and reveal their secrets. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Media and the General Commission for Media Regulation have established regulatory and professional frameworks that contribute to regulating media practice and protecting rights and privacy, reflecting the importance of having a clear reference that governs media work and prevents chaos.
- Even in the sports field in Saudi Arabia, there has been no confusion between the professional and personal lives of athletes, whether they are national players, coaches, or professionals from outside the Kingdom. Yes, the public and the media have the right to discuss performance, results, and technical decisions, but no one has the right to invade the personal life of an athlete or link it to their work, as long as it does not relate to a violation that warrants legal accountability.
- Even press conferences, as a space for dialogue, asking questions, and discussing issues, have professional and regulatory controls and instructions that must be adhered to, including obtaining the necessary permits when required, and respecting the journalist's right to ask and the speaker's right to respond, without insult, defamation, or belittling any party. Disagreement in opinion does not justify crossing the boundaries of mutual respect.
- Media culture and social responsibility on social media have become an urgent necessity. We must ask ourselves before we write or publish: What are we saying? How are we saying it? What impact will what we write have on others and society? Not everything we know gives us the right to publish it, and not every mistake we see grants us the right to insult its owner or defame them. There are specialized bodies responsible for investigation and accountability, regardless of the person's status or influence, and individuals should not grant themselves authority they do not possess.
- What benefit does society gain from following scenes of insults, slander, and defamation, or listening to details of personal and family disputes, even revealing what goes on inside homes? Homes have their secrets, and family life has its sanctity, and no one has the right to expose what is hidden or turn people's privacy into material for entertainment, excitement, and gathering followers, no matter their status or level of influence.
- It is unfortunate that such transgressions sometimes come from public figures who are expected to be more wise, balanced, and aware of the responsibility of words and their impact. These figures should not be swayed by voices that encourage and applaud them or provide them with justifications to continue transgressing; temporary encouragement does not absolve anyone of responsibility, and ultimately, the reference is to the regulations and laws, and what the relevant authorities decide when a violation is proven.
- We are not against criticism, nor against freedom of expression, nor against exposing mistakes and discussing public issues, but we are against turning these spaces into arenas for defamation, revenge, and violation of sanctities. Freedom is a responsibility, and words are a trust, and respecting the privacy of others is not just an ethical choice, but a principle that must be protected by regulations and adhered to by societies.
- I believe you understand what I mean... Not everything that is known should be said, and not everything that is said should be published, and no one has the right to be a guardian over the lives of others.
