The factors driving Iran in its current behavior in the war are intertwined, particularly in demonstrating its hostility and disdain towards Arab countries, whether through direct attacks or by supporting and mobilizing its proxies while hiding behind them. Iran claims that its attacks on Arab countries aim to strike at American interests and objectives, and then asserts that its support for the proxies spread across Yemen, Iraq, and Lebanon falls within the framework of its revolutionary export doctrine under the pretext of "supporting oppressed peoples and movements." It is unnecessary to remind that these movements or proxies have turned their countries into arenas to secure Iran's interests, even at the expense of their own national security, and tools to challenge the state and overturn laws and norms, in addition to forming a cross-border threat to other countries.
Iran exaggerates in showcasing its surplus power and insists on establishing a threatening language that allows it to threaten countries and peoples with what it considers its right, by positioning itself as the region's policeman, and insisting on a formula that pushes surrounding countries either to submit to what it sees as beneficial to its interests or to face continued attacks and threats to their security under the pretext of "fighting foreign presence" in the region.
However, behind all this, there is a fear that haunts the Iranian collective memory and disturbs its present, which explains many reasons for its current aggressive behavior. This fear stems from what has come to be known in Iranian political literature as the "Turkmenchay Syndrome," which expresses a chronic fear among Iranians of international negotiations and diplomatic agreements. Therefore, successive Iranian leaderships view political settlements with external powers as "betrayal" or a repetition of humiliating experiences in Iranian history, specifically the Treaty of Turkmenchay, which was an agreement between Qajar Iran and the Russian Empire in 1828, in which Iran was forced to cede territories it controlled in the South Caucasus, particularly in Armenia and Azerbaijan.
From here, one can understand the statement of former Iranian leader Khomeini when he accepted the settlement with Iraq in 1988 under UN Resolution 598, which paved the way for the cessation of the Iran-Iraq war, by saying that he "drank the cup of poison." This cup of poison, in Iranian memory, represents negotiation and acceptance of a political settlement that brought to mind the loss. There is a similarity in the circumstances that led to the losses of Iranians in both wars, starting with the insistence on military confrontation and rejecting any possible settlement, then yielding to negotiation and settlement not only due to losses or military costs but also because of economic costs and Iran's inability to bear economic losses and thus maintain internal security.
From here, one can understand the context of the criticisms that reached the level of treason against former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif when the nuclear agreement was signed in 2015, which stipulated the lifting of sanctions related to the nuclear program under specific conditions. For Iranians, negotiation is a sign of weakness, and settlement is betrayal, compounded by the exploitation of religion and revolutionary slogans to continue a state of wars, a policy of attrition, buying time, and remaining in a state of hostility with any external power.
Today, Iranians recall their memory burdened by loss in the discussion about the reality of the concept of profit and loss in their behavior. Additionally, the reversal of the spell on the sorcerer through the imposition of a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz and the transformation of this card into a burden on Iran itself, along with the tightening of the economic blockade by President Trump, brings back to the Iranian collective memory the entire trajectory of losses starting from 1828. History repeats itself in some of its details, so will Iran fall for the third time?
