The mesquite tree (Prosopis), scientifically known as Prosopis juliflora, belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae). It is a medium-sized thorny tree or shrub, typically ranging in height from 10 to 15 meters. The native habitat of mesquite is the dry and semi-dry regions of Mexico and Central and North America. It has been introduced to many parts of the world for decades for purposes such as combating desertification, stabilizing sands, and providing shade and firewood. Mesquite was widely used in the Kingdom several decades ago for urban afforestation, but it did not succeed for various reasons.
The mesquite tree is characterized by exceptional resistance to drought, high temperatures, salinity, and poor soils. It thrives in harsh environments thanks to its strong and deep roots (which can reach depths of up to 50 meters), allowing it to access groundwater efficiently. Additionally, its abundant seed production, with seeds that remain viable for several years and disperse in various ways, has enabled it to spread easily to new areas where it competes with native plants and impacts ecosystems. Compounding the problem, the branches and leaves of mesquite are unpalatable to most animals, providing the plant with significant immunity against both wild and domesticated animals.
Dangerous Implications:
Invasive species (plant or animal) are a concern for many countries due to their environmental, economic, and health risks. According to the 2023 report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), annual losses caused by invasive species exceed $423 billion. Among the most dangerous invasive plant species are water hyacinth and Japanese knotweed. Returning to the subject of this article, the mesquite tree's strength, rapid growth, tolerance to harsh environmental conditions, high seed viability, deep root system, and low number of natural enemies and pests have placed it on the list of highly dangerous invasive plants that are difficult to eradicate.
Mesquite has many advantages, the most important of which are its ability to grow in extremely harsh environments where most plants cannot survive, the quality of the wood and charcoal produced from it, and its preference as forage for bees. Its pods can also be used as animal feed due to their nutritional value, and there are many products that can be obtained from the tree.
Nevertheless, the environmental and economic damages caused by mesquite cannot be ignored. Some regions of the Kingdom (especially the west, south, and southwest) have witnessed a serious invasion of this species across many ecosystems, causing a noticeable decline in local species. The tree's dense stands obstruct water flow in valleys and gullies, leading to soil and hydrological disruptions. Its strong and widespread roots deplete surface water reserves, while large mesquite trees with intertwined branches hinder the movement of wild and domesticated animals, resulting in significant economic and environmental losses. Additionally, they compete with crop plants in agricultural holdings, leading to increased production costs and reduced yields. The impact on biodiversity at the microbial level (below the soil surface) is another concern that deserves attention, and the dense flowers of mesquite can cause respiratory allergies in some individuals.
Are there solutions?
Mesquite is not the only invasive plant in the Kingdom; there are also prickly pear (wild cactus), false tobacco, and arugula, among others. However, the strength and resilience of mesquite, along with its massive size, place it at the forefront of these invasive species. Dealing with invasive plants and weeds has been part of humanity's struggle with these species since agriculture was practiced about 10,000 years ago. Following the principle that "judging something is based on its understanding," one cannot address a phenomenon or problem without knowing its limits and dimensions. Since the issue of invasive species in the Kingdom, including mesquite, has not been studied and documented scientifically and accurately until now, this has led to ineffective short-term solutions by relevant authorities such as the National Center for Vegetation Development and the Waqaa Center. Given that effective responses to these invasive species depend on understanding their nature, and since each species has a specific mechanism for control, this requires intelligent employment of research and innovation, which has been overlooked so far. Additionally, the involvement of local communities in efforts to eliminate invasive species is indispensable.
In conclusion, it is essential to emphasize the following points:
Invasive species, including mesquite, pose a serious threat to biodiversity, agricultural development, and natural resources.
The lack of accurate information about invasive species, particularly mesquite, and the absence of a clear control strategy diminish the impact and effectiveness of control projects.
There is an urgent need to employ research and innovation in control plans and programs.
The existence of some advantages and characteristics of the mesquite tree does not diminish its risks and harms.
There is an urgent need for a national program to monitor invasive species, assess their impacts, and address them.
