Two months ago, I visited Riyadh for the first time, specifically, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in general, as a guest on Al Arabiya channel. However, my relationship with the Kingdom did not begin with this visit. I have known it since my teenage years through my love for music, heritage, and Gulf traditions, and later during my years of maturity, university studies, and work in politics and international relations. Saudi Arabia is naturally present in our Lebanese memory through its role over the decades.
During those stages, I viewed the Kingdom from two angles: its religious, cultural, and civilizational status, and its political and historical significance and what it represents in the region.
For years, I have followed what has been written and said about the transformations taking place in the Kingdom due to the "Vision 2030" launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. However, I did not limit myself to what I heard and read; I treated the vision document as if it were a study material, reading it multiple times in an attempt to understand Mohammed bin Salman himself and the philosophy with which he leads his country. What is happening in Saudi Arabia goes beyond mere projects and investments to a vision or redefinition of the state, society, economy, and the Kingdom's position in the world.
Therefore, when I arrived in Riyadh, I wanted to test the image I had painted in my mind for years. I saw a city that blends familiarity and tranquility, between its traditions and uniqueness on one hand, and the significant economic and urban transformation on the other. But what struck me the most is that the vision is not based on a program of projects separate from society; rather, it is a philosophy and framework intended to reflect on society itself. For example, I learned that companies and institutions operating in the Kingdom across various sectors, whether Saudi or foreign, are required to implement substantial changes in management, governance, environmental conditions, and more in alignment with the goals of Vision 2030. This is not a minor detail.
When discussing the vision, one must pause at Diriyah. This area holds exceptional importance; it is not just a historical site being rehabilitated to become a tourist and investment destination, but rather resembles a timeline connecting the contemporary Saudi project with the history of the state that originated from it in the 18th century. From Diriyah, where Imam Muhammad bin Saud established the foundations of the first Saudi state, through the stages and transformations that shaped the Kingdom, to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who maintains a historical weight and develops the founders' journey in line with the requirements of the era, history becomes part of the future project rather than its opposite.
My first visit to Riyadh allowed me to closely observe the Kingdom's policies to better understand what its visionary leader desires.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman carries his vision to the world's top leaders, a vision that originates from the heart of the Kingdom and its society and needs, bringing the world to it with what it desires and what it can offer. The man has chosen to be a statesman who does not only want to shape the present and future of his country but also to be a partner in shaping and leading regional and international politics in line with his vision. From this perspective, I interpret Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to France and the accompanying agreements that elevated the relationship to a broader level of partnership, confirming that the vision extends beyond transformation within the borders of the Kingdom. The warm reception of the visit in the media and French political circles indicates that the question is no longer just about what the world can offer the Kingdom in its transformation journey, but rather what Saudi Arabia can offer the world. France, like other major countries, understands that its influential presence in the region is only complete through the gateway of the Kingdom.
