The difference between illusion, doubt, and suspicion is vast! When we refer to some Arabic dictionaries and the books of jurists, we find a significant confusion and disorder in defining these concepts. For example, it has been said in their definitions:
- Doubt: It is the hesitation of the mind between two matters equally.
- The preferred: It is suspicion.
- The less preferred: It is illusion.
It has also been said: Doubt is the opposite of certainty, and its essence is the disturbance of the soul, then it was used in the context of hesitation between two things, whether both sides are equal or one is preferred over the other. Allah Almighty said: "So if you are in doubt about what We have sent down to you" (Yunus: 94), meaning uncertain. The scholars of principles said: It is the hesitation of the mind between two matters equally. It was said: If the hesitation is between two sides equally, it is doubt; otherwise, the preferred is suspicion, and the less preferred is illusion. The most accurate definition is that doubt is a mental state of hesitation between two or more matters without favoring one over the other. This means that a person is not certain about the correctness or incorrectness of a particular idea or fact.
It appears from the definitions in some dictionaries that they lack precision and clarity, as they overlap with what is known in psychology about the disease of illusion, where it was said that its essence is the disturbance of the soul. The previous definitions found in some dictionaries do not align with modern knowledge, and they mix up illusion, doubt, and suspicion.
For example, some have suggested that the ranks of knowledge are four, which students of knowledge should focus on:
1. Certainty.
2. Suspicion.
3. Doubt.
4. Illusion.
This classification is considered a mix-up and a shortcoming in definition because illusion is a complex concept that is approached from different angles in philosophy and psychology. Therefore, it is necessary to move away from the definitions found in dictionaries and Arabic jurisprudential references and rely on modern approaches to understand these concepts. The most disciplined definition.
Illusion in Philosophy and Psychology:
In Philosophy:
Illusion is associated with knowledge and the incorrect perception of reality. It can result from the limitations of the senses or the mind, or due to the influence of preconceived ideas or cultural illusions. This means that the mind may be unable to distinguish between what is real and logical and between fantasies and illusions.
- In idealistic philosophy, as in Plato's Allegory of the Cave, the material world is considered illusory or shadows of absolute truth. The prisoners see shadows on the wall and believe they are the truth, while the real reality exists outside the cave.
In empirical philosophy, David Hume sees that illusion may arise from a misinterpretation of sensations. Human perception can sometimes deceive us, leading to incorrect beliefs.
In existential philosophy, Jean-Paul Sartre sees that illusion may result from self-denial or escape from responsibility. A person may create illusions to avoid confronting the reality of their existence.
In Psychology:
Illusion is viewed as a distortion in perception or thinking that leads to a misinterpretation of reality. It can be associated with mental states or psychological disorders.
- Perceptual illusion: Such as visual or auditory illusions, where a person sees or hears something that does not exist in reality. These illusions may result from the way the brain processes sensory information.
- Illusion resulting from psychological disorders: Such as schizophrenia or delusional disorder, which are fixed beliefs that do not align with reality and cannot be changed by logic or evidence. For example, a person may believe they are being persecuted or that they are an important figure without any factual basis.
- Illusion in social psychology: Illusions may arise from social or cultural influences, such as believing in superstitions or conspiracy theories due to group or societal influence.
The difference between illusion and hallucination:
- Illusion: It is a misinterpretation of a real stimulus. For example, seeing a rope as a snake.
- Hallucination: It is a sensory experience without the presence of a real external stimulus, such as hearing nonexistent voices.
The fundamental question:
Are our societies living in illusion, such as believing in superstitions or conspiracy theories or venerating the heritage created by humans? Answering this question objectively is the key to the solution.
