Entities, institutions, and nations are stories of life that begin with their birth and stages of development or decline, and how they carve their path through rubble, obstacles, hardships, abundance, scarcity, weakness, strength, and motivating or inhibiting factors. Each story is intriguing, revealing the secrets of success and failure, challenge and loss, with all its elements and vocabulary. Just as creative poets excel in their poetry, distinguished storytellers excel in narrating the tale, philosophy, and concepts from which we derive lessons and human and life images that may be absent from some, and may even be absent from their own owners and the heroes of the story, as well as other key or non-key participants; because they are under pressure and caught in the whirlwind of life that spins them forcefully and pushes them through events, they nearly lose sight of the things close to them or that they possess on their journey to create their lives or seek betterment according to the convictions shaped by the environment in which they lived, and they cannot escape its dominance.
The question is: Do these individuals - or do we - create our lives? Or are we, in fact, creating what the events have prepared us for? The physical abilities, social status, and many minute details that constitute the events of the story are either inherited or the result of the environment of the story's hero himself. This means that these components are not the hero's merit, nor do they have any control over them. Therefore, what makes the difference is the hero's ability to break free from monotony and what the nature of things dictates. If a person remains a prisoner of their surroundings, heritage, and desires, the story will not have a happy ending; rather, it will resemble many stories of failure, fading, and decline that the audience does not seek and that legends do not recount. When the hero is enamored with their city, they condense the world into a city. Alexander, who built Alexandria far from Macedonia, wanted to be a legend and a mighty hero respected by the masses and history, so he looked far beyond. The contrasting image of success is the story of Union Army General McClellan, who was unaware of the capabilities available to him. This failure occurred despite McClellan being organized and having formed a strong army known as the Army of the Potomac; however, McClellan's main flaw was his tendency to overestimate the enemy's strength and underestimate his own army's power. As a result of this hesitation, McClellan lost a critical opportunity to achieve a significant victory for the Union that could have changed the course of the war. His indecisive intervention and incorrect assessments of the enemy's strength led to his failure, ultimately resulting in his dismissal.
The difference between legend and failure lies not in the circumstances, but in the way of thinking. Alexander would not have become great if he had remained dreaming within the walls of Macedonia; rather, he made his glory by looking beyond the horizon and believing in his ability to challenge the impossible. Meanwhile, McClellan, despite all his capabilities, remained a prisoner of his doubts, and his defeat was of his own making.
When a person does not recognize the strength they possess and seeks to find strength far from them, defeat ensues. A person is defeated first from within. So, where does true strength lie?
In the mind that refuses to be a mere echo of circumstances, and in the will that carves its path through the winds of despair. Strength lies in transforming resources – no matter how meager they may seem – into a weapon for victory. History is not written by those who wait for ideal circumstances, but by those who create them themselves, even if they start from scratch. True strength lies in choice, not in circumstances. At every moment, there are choices before them that should not be reduced to place, type, form, or method.
Every individual and every group can boldly write their story and not leave it to circumstances or others. Life is nothing but a narrative, and an individual or a group can make it an epic that immortalizes them, or just a page that is forgotten.
