The American envoy to Lebanon, Tom Barak, is mistaken if he thinks that the issue of Hezbollah's weapons is an internal Lebanese problem with no external solution. The Lebanese have been unable to confront this issue since the inception of this party, and no problem in Lebanon has ever been resolved without external intervention!
The issue of Hezbollah's weapons did not arise internally, and its resolution will not be internal. While the last war may have cut off its supply of weapons, removing what remains of its arms requires external pressures that compel the party to understand regional changes and the necessity of adapting to them, by adopting political action as the sole means for the Lebanese to participate in building the future of their country!
The narrative of retaining weapons until Israel withdraws is a lie that is no longer believed by either the internal or external parties. After the 2006 war, the party's weapons turned against the Lebanese, and it did not distinguish them from the Israelis. Moreover, the party's fundamental problem is its subservience to an external project and its submission to the will of a foreign government, thus it does not serve Lebanon's interests, nor does it represent an internal project!
Today, the party is experiencing one of its most severe defeats after losing its most prominent leaders and suffering devastating blows. While it has lost the ability to threaten Israel, it is still ready to flex its muscles against the Lebanese, and its weapons must be removed so that it can become a politically equal contender, with its only source of strength being its popular base through the ballot boxes!
The international community's abandonment of Lebanon at this critical stage is tantamount to giving Hezbollah a golden opportunity to catch its breath and rebuild its strength, which still, even after the blows it has endured, exceeds the level of parity with the state and other political forces!
In short... Hezbollah will not voluntarily surrender its weapons, and at this stage, it will only engage in maneuvering to buy time. The world must help Lebanon achieve the peace it deserves!
