The term "hackathon" has become familiar in the world of innovations, and the origin of the word is a compound English term made up of "hack," meaning breakthrough or unconventional solutions, and "marathon," meaning a long race. The intended meaning is "an intensive, time-bound event where creators, developers, and designers present their ideas to provide innovative solutions to current or anticipated future problems."
The idea of the hackathon began in the 1990s within tech companies in Silicon Valley, then spread to the rest of the world and expanded to include other fields beyond technology, such as health, education, security, and other sectors.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation in Saudi Arabia launched last week, for the first time, a national challenge in the aviation sector called AVITHON, in a move that aligns with the significant development the sector is experiencing and races towards a greater future that becomes more apparent every day.
The aviation hackathon came in a distinctive and accessible way that does not require physical attendance, as participating teams gather through the electronic space, allowing the largest number of young talents to contribute to shaping the future of aviation and its features, in addition to opportunities to win prizes totaling nearly half a million riyals.
The creative race includes three tracks for presenting ideas; the first: "Passenger Experience in the Aviation Sector," where ideas and solutions can be presented to improve the travel experience, whether in travel procedures, airport services, or onboard the aircraft. The second track revolves around "Aviation Security and Safety," to present ideas and solutions related to developing security systems and safety procedures in a way that reassures the traveler without disturbing them or consuming their time and energy. The third track concerns "Sustainability in the Aviation Sector," to present ideas and solutions related to reducing carbon emissions, improving the environment of airports and aircraft, recycling waste, or methods of using air conditioning in facilities.
The launch of AVITHON aligns with Vision 2030, which believes that transformation does not come only from high-level policies or major investments, but also from the streams of ideas launched by young minds. Airports today are a true reflection of the nation's progress, providing visitors with their first impression of it, and the ideas presented today are the building blocks for tomorrow. This temporary event will, God willing, have a lasting impact over time, establishing a culture of continuous improvement in an industry facing daily challenges, amid increasing operational density, changing passenger expectations, and rapid market fluctuations.
It is beautiful that dreams intensify to shape reality with a young, bold, and creative spirit, and that colors multiply to paint the big picture in a moment of collective flight of Saudi minds towards the future.
