Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today (Sunday) an agreement with Russia to exchange 1,200 names of prisoners of war, clarifying that work is ongoing on the list.
Zelensky explained in a post on his account on "X" that the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, confirmed that there are communications with the Russian side and preparations are currently underway to exchange 1,200 prisoners, emphasizing the necessity of bringing everyone home, both military and civilian, regardless of the difficulties.
Zelensky quoted his chief of staff Andriy Yermak as saying: "The United States is committed to providing support, and we are grateful for that," noting that pressure on Russia could be beneficial in a way that makes it feel the consequences of prolonging the war.
Zelensky clarified that he discussed with his team in the meeting the talks held with Russia in Istanbul on July 23 and the continuation of the exchange of prisoners of war.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed on Friday the existence of communications between his country and the United States since the beginning of this year regarding Ukraine, describing them as "extremely fruitful" and yielding tangible results.
Lavrov explained that meetings between the two sides are still ongoing at various levels, including the phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump.
He pointed out that the current U.S. administration's reopening of channels for direct dialogue with Moscow aligns perfectly with sound diplomatic norms, indicating that "substantive negotiations regarding Ukraine between Moscow and Washington since the beginning of the year have been very useful and fruitful, and thanks to President Donald Trump's insistence, the Kyiv regime agreed to our proposal to resume the Istanbul negotiations."
