The Lebanese President, General Joseph Aoun, affirmed today (Thursday) the necessity of confining weapons to the state, based on his commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty, the liberation of its lands, and the building of a state for all its citizens.
During a speech at the Ministry of Defense on the occasion of Army Day, Aoun called on all political forces to approach the issue of weapons from a comprehensive and responsible national perspective, away from provocation and competition, emphasizing that the current phase is critical and does not tolerate division or escalation.
On the governmental front, he stressed that the formation of the government was done quickly to avoid a vacuum, and that it includes a group of elite competencies working silently, acknowledging the depth of the economic crisis and popular pressures.
The Lebanese President pointed out that the government focused on six key files, the most prominent of which is restoring people's trust in the judiciary, through the appointment of a new Judicial Council and activating judicial inspection, investigating the Beirut port crime, pursuing involved figures without protection or immunity, and enhancing the independence of the judiciary, where the government approved the project and referred it to the Parliament, in addition to confining weapons to the state, with military and security formations to accompany the challenges, controlling smuggling, dismantling terrorist cells, and preparing for reconstruction by appointing a Board of Directors for the Council for Development and Reconstruction, conducting damage assessments, and returning Lebanon to its Arab and international surroundings through official visits and dormant agreements that have been reactivated, as well as opening embassies and the return of Arab and foreign tourists, in addition to the relationship with Syria.
Aoun affirmed Lebanon's keenness on an excellent relationship with Syria for the benefit of both peoples, pointing to a Saudi initiative to stabilize the borders between the two countries.
Aoun addressed the Lebanese Army, saying: "I have paid much of my popular credit to spare you from wars, but the hour of truth has begun to strike. We must choose between collapse or stability, and I have chosen to cross with you to a better homeland," adding: "We do not want one faction to strengthen itself with weapons or an axis or external depth, but we all want to be strong in our unity, our army, and our security agencies in the face of any aggression. We want to restore a state that protects us all and embodies our wills and the fruits of our sacrifices."
He concluded his speech with a clear call to the political, spiritual, and economic forces, asking for a "historic and courageous decision" to grant the army exclusive control over weapons, stating: "Our legitimacy comes from the legitimacy of our army, and our dignity comes from its dignity. The celebration is not complete without the completion of liberation, nor is it complete without the achievement of demarcation, and it is not complete without the exclusivity of the army's weapons and the commencement of reconstruction."
