The Syrian authorities thwarted an arms smuggling operation into Lebanese territory in the city of Qusayr in the Homs countryside. The Ministry of Interior announced in a brief statement today (Thursday) that the shipment included guided anti-tank missiles (ATGM) and 30 mm ammunition, according to the Syrian news agency (SANA). It added that the driver was arrested and referred to the competent judiciary to take the necessary legal actions against him.
It is noteworthy that this is not the first time that the new Syrian forces have seized smuggled weapons across the Lebanese-Syrian border, especially in the Qusayr area, which has been an important location for the Lebanese Hezbollah throughout the years of war.
Since the new Syrian administration took power in the country after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime on December 8 of last year, it has sought to control the borders with Lebanon, which had witnessed extensive smuggling operations of weapons, drugs, and goods as well. The Lebanese authorities have also worked to control illegal crossings along the border, preventing the smuggling operations that were previously active.
For its part, the European Commission for Mediterranean Affairs, Dubravka Šuica, confirmed that she held constructive discussions with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara regarding Syria's integration into the Southern Neighborhood Policy.
She stated in a tweet on her X account today that she addressed the reintegration of Syria into the Southern Neighborhood of the European Union and participation in the new Mediterranean Charter.
She added that the Union is ready to support a peaceful and inclusive transition that includes all Syrians and is based on tolerance and the protection of human rights. She noted the launch of transition and recovery plans with an intensification of the European Union's assistance. She affirmed that the European Union's commitment to supporting Syria is steadfast, and expectations are high.
Last week, the European Union officially lifted sanctions on Syria to support the country emerging from a bloody war that lasted 13 years, while maintaining those targeting officers and leaders of the former regime, as well as Bashar al-Assad and his family.
