The Sudanese army thwarted an attack by the Rapid Support Forces using kamikaze drones targeting the city of Al-Obeid in North Kordofan state. Military sources and eyewitnesses confirmed that the armed forces' defenses successfully intercepted the drones.
According to the sources, no casualties were reported as a result of the attack that occurred in the past few hours, noting that the attack came just hours after the army announced the completion of securing the strategic export road linking Omdurman and North Kordofan, and regaining control over several towns located north of the city of Al-Obeid.
AFP reported today (Monday) that two military sources confirmed that the Sudanese army regained control of a main road linking Khartoum to the city of Al-Obeid, which the Rapid Support Forces were trying to completely encircle.
One of the sources confirmed that control of the Omdurman - Al-Obeid road pushed the Rapid Support Forces westward, away from the capital of North Kordofan. It also opens a second supply route to Al-Obeid and beyond.
Meanwhile, the joint force allied with the Sudanese army announced progress in the combat fronts in North Kordofan, confirming that operations resulted in the destruction and burning of more than 62 combat vehicles belonging to the Rapid Support Forces, and the seizure of 54 other vehicles in good condition.
Sources revealed that the Sudanese army seized more than 150 combat vehicles and armored vehicles, as well as large stores of weapons and ammunition belonging to the Rapid Support Forces in Kordofan.
The joint force stated in a statement that the military operations inflicted significant losses on the Rapid Support Forces, including the deaths of several of their members and the flight of others, leaving behind equipment and machinery on the battlefield.
For his part, the governor of Darfur, Mini Arko Minawi, stated that eight military groups belonging to the Rapid Support Forces were "completely destroyed" over the past two days, as a result of what he described as "precise strikes" carried out by the armed forces, the joint force, and the popular resistance.
Minawi added that the forces managed to liberate five areas and regain control of the strategic export road linking North Kordofan with the capital Khartoum, considering that these developments represent "the beginning of the collapse of the militias," as he put it.
Minawi affirmed that regaining more areas brings the Sudanese people closer to restoring their security, stability, and the prestige of their state, adding that the forces are moving steadily until the entire national territory is cleared of rebellion.
The Sudanese army has intensified its military operations in North Kordofan and its east over the past months, as part of its efforts to regain areas previously controlled by the Rapid Support Forces and secure supply lines leading to Al-Obeid and Khartoum.
North Kordofan state represents one of the most important battle fronts in the Sudanese war, due to its location linking central Sudan with the Darfur region through a network of land routes. It is also a strategic gateway to the city of Al-Obeid, which is controlled by the Sudanese army.
The resource-rich Kordofan region is located on a vital route connecting the Darfur region, which is controlled by the Rapid Support Forces in the west, with Khartoum and the eastern cities of Sudan that are under the army's control.
