Oil prices fell today by more than 7%, reaching their lowest level since July 21, following the halt of attacks between the United States and Iran at the beginning of the week, which had persisted for two weeks. This has raised hopes for a diplomatic solution that could ease tensions and allow for the resumption of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude futures dropped by $7.54, or 7.79%, to $89.24 per barrel, the lowest level since July 21. West Texas Intermediate crude fell by $6.11, or 6.84%, to $83.20 per barrel.
Both contracts are trading at their lowest levels since July 21, after rising over the past three weeks. Brent crude had reached $100 per barrel as the conflict in the region continued.
De-escalation of Tensions
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Wallace stated in remarks to Fox News Sunday and other American media: "President Donald Trump has decided to temporarily halt the attacks to allow more time for diplomacy."
Analysts at ING noted in a client memo: "Oil prices have dropped significantly in early trading amid the calming of military movements between the United States and Iran, providing the first tangible signs of a potential easing of tensions."
They added: "The movement of oil prices this morning clearly reflects the market's urgent need for positive news." Despite the halt in attacks, shipping data showed that fewer than ten vessels carrying commodities crossed the Strait of Hormuz daily at the beginning of this week.
