Tomorrow marks the fifteenth anniversary of the passing of Saudi artist Abdulaziz Al-Hammad (1946–2010), one of the pioneers of visual, theatrical, and radio arts in the Kingdom, and one of the names that carried the spirit of leadership with stability and elegance during the early days of cultural movement.
Al-Hammad was born in Al-Zulfi in 1946 and graduated from the Primary Teachers Institute in Riyadh in 1962, before completing his artistic studies at the Institute of Art Education, graduating in 1967. His steps were not hesitant, but rather illuminating, when he was sent to the United States to continue his studies in visual arts, returning with a mature visual experience that reflected in his exhibitions and artistic participations.
However, Al-Hammad was not just a visual artist; he was also an actor, author, and radio director. His theatrical beginnings were early, as he participated during his studies with his colleagues, including Mohammed Al-Twayan, before moving to the small screen in 1968 with the series "The Other Face," which he wrote, acted in, and directed by Saad Al-Fraih. In 1969, he participated in the Tunisian series "The Wonders of the Building," completing the following year with a radio work that left a special mark: "Sawalif Al-Nas," which he wrote and directed himself, and later became one of the significant milestones in the history of Saudi radio.
Al-Hammad was also the first to take on the responsibility of visual arts at the Cultural and Arts Association upon its establishment, bringing together painting, theater, word, and voice in a single narrative that embodies the comprehensive artist.
Abdulaziz Al-Hammad passed away on June 17, 2010, after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a rich experience that deserves to be remembered, and a name that does not fade from the memory of those who lived through the beginnings of Saudi art. On his anniversary, we recall his impact and affirm that true leadership is indeed immortalized, not just in words.
