Since the launch of the Gulf Cup in 1970, football alone has not been the sole factor in establishing the presence, continuity, and popularity of this major Gulf event. The Gulf sports media, with its various means and tools, has been a key partner in the success of this championship and in solidifying its status over more than five decades. In Gulf 27, which concluded its competitions the day before yesterday in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, specifically in the bride of the sea, Jeddah, the Gulf media was strongly present, not only in following the football competitions and their events both on and off the field, but also in presenting a different image of the championship, the city, and Saudi society. This added more excitement, thrill, engagement, and beauty to this Gulf event.
-Those who followed the media coverage of Gulf 27 noticed the extent and intensity of the competition that existed among sports media outlets in the region, striving to win the audience's satisfaction and attract their interest regardless of their national affiliations, while ensuring the provision of distinguished media content through words and images, according to different models that determine the quality based on the media outlet's capabilities, whether material, technical, or human. It was clear that each channel and each program aimed to be "number one" in providing coverage that satisfies viewers and achieves a stardom distinct from that of the champion team and the titles won in this championship.
-As for print media, which was once a significant player and a main partner in the success of Gulf championships, it is no longer what it used to be. The media landscape has completely changed after digital media invaded various aspects of our lives, and sports programs and electronic platforms now have a stronger presence than before, in light of a new media reality imposed by speed, technology, the internet, breaking news, impactful images, and direct information that reaches the audience in seconds, without the need to wait until the next day to find out what the print media will publish. Print journalism recognized this shift early on, so it rushed to establish its electronic platforms to preserve its historical status and intrinsic value, keeping pace with the new media reality that has imposed itself on the world.
-Through my humble follow-up of these programs across various Gulf channels and the healthy competition among them, you find some viewers who remain focused and impressed by a particular program and do not prefer others. There are also some professionals who believe that their program or channel is the top choice for viewership. To be fair and just, I can say that success has had different images and visions from one channel to another and from one program to another.
-The guest media did not focus solely on critical opinions, analysis, news material, and statements in its programs, but rather seized the opportunity of being in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and acted like a "tourist guide," conveying to its viewers through sound and image aspects of inherited Saudi customs and traditions, as well as various types of popular dishes known in Jeddah and its surroundings, alongside some folklore, traditional arts, and Hijazi songs. This presented another beautiful image of the Kingdom and Jeddah, which received a great deal of interaction and interest from visitors and viewers. This is a tremendous effort for which these channels and the programs they represented deserve appreciation, as they succeeded in making their presence in the Kingdom an opportunity to introduce other aspects that are no less beautiful than football itself.
-Some expressed disappointment, blame, and criticism, questioning: Why were Saudi government and private channels unable to match the level of distinguished coverage that other Gulf channels provided? In my opinion, the answer to this question is quite simple; local channels, both government and private, have previously presented this type of excellence through various specialized and general programs, covering different aspects related to the regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and what each region is known for in terms of cultural, artistic, sports, and social characteristics. Therefore, it was natural for this opportunity to come this time for other Gulf channels to present their own coverage in their unique way, introducing viewers to Jeddah and the Kingdom from another perspective. This is exactly what happened, and we saw and admired what the Qatari, Omani, Iraqi, Kuwaiti, Bahraini, and Yemeni channels presented in their various coverage, which combined enjoyment, competition, excitement, and knowledge.
-This admiration that we sensed from various segments of Gulf and Arab society, as well as from visitors and residents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, confirms the success of the media coverage of Gulf 27. It also affirms that the championship was not merely competitions on the green rectangle, but rather a comprehensive Gulf occasion that brought together sports, media, culture, heritage, and tourism.
-Through the attention that Jeddah and its historical and cultural landmarks received, we should not forget the unsung heroes behind this success, who contributed to facilitating the mission of these channels and enabled them to present this beautiful image of the Kingdom. Among them are the ministries of sports, media, culture, and tourism. It is clear that these entities played their role, aware of their responsibility towards the esteemed guests who came to the Kingdom to cover a major Gulf event, fulfilling their professional duty and presenting an honorable model of Saudi hospitality.
A final note
-The truth must be said.. the champion of Gulf 27 was not just the team that lifted the cup, but there was another star outside the green rectangle named Gulf media, which succeeded in being a true partner in creating excitement, beauty, and success for this edition of the championship.
