The idea of the invisible hand in philosophy and economics means that when a person seeks to achieve their own interest, and when a trader looks for profit, and a consumer seeks the best price, they inadvertently drive the wheel of society towards prosperity.
For example: the baker who wakes up at dawn every day does not open his bakery to satisfy the hungry, but rather opens it in hopes of earning a living and making a profit. In order to outdo his competitor across the street, you see him striving to improve the quality of his bread and slightly lowering its price. As a result, the customer gets clean and good bread, the baker earns his daily bread, and the entire market flourishes.. all of this happens automatically, without the government intervening to dictate the rules of baking to the baker! This dynamic based on supply and demand and personal interest is what creates the efficiency of free markets.
In the heart of Saudi Arabia today, where the "Saudi Vision 2030" is reshaping life and the economy at an astonishing pace, free market forces are playing an increasingly significant role. The state is no longer the sole driver of every detail, but has made room for competition and innovation to create wonders in vital sectors such as technology, trade, entertainment, and aviation, where everyone competes to offer the best, and the primary beneficiaries are the citizens and residents.
However.. the invisible hand is not an absolute magic wand; it improves work in the light, but it can stumble in the dark! Sometimes, individuals get carried away by their narrow interests to the extent that it leads to market failure. We remember what happened with real estate prices at one point when some rushed to monopolize vacant land and left it stagnant to achieve fantastical capital gains. Here, the market alone failed to correct the course, and the citizen who wished to own a home felt the harshness of this imbalance. This was not a problem that the market could solve on its own; rather, it required decisive intervention and smart regulation from the state, represented in "white land fees" and housing programs to restore balance.
A vibrant economy is not built by focusing on one side alone, but is born from a harmonious symphony. The Saudi experience clearly proves that leaving things completely to the invisible hand and relying solely on it may produce societal distortions and leave sensitive sectors like housing, health, and education vulnerable to wealth concentration and the absence of justice. Hence, the genius of the contemporary Saudi model emerged, a model that allows market forces the freedom to ignite the spark of innovation and create abundance and efficiency, while the vigilant eye of the state remains present through legislation, support programs like the Citizen Account, and social protection umbrellas, to wisely steer the compass. Ultimately, the battle is not between an unrestricted free market or a state that controls everything.. but rather the art of the precise blend between the vibrant movement of the market and the compassionate wisdom of the state that ensures no one falls into the hands of the monopolistic trader.
