The preliminary investigations into the crash of the (Learjet 60) private aircraft in Florida revealed the identity of the co-pilot, Natalia Gadilha Filgueiras, a 20-year-old who was among the victims of the incident after the plane fell almost vertically before exploding in Palm Beach County.
Natalia had obtained her private pilot license in 2023 while still in high school, even before getting her driver's license. She caught attention in a previous interview with (CBS12) where she talked about flying planes at the age of seventeen, and she shared photos from inside the cockpit of the same aircraft on the (Threads) platform, expressing her joy in flying (Learjet 60) planes.
Air traffic surveillance recordings and flight tracking data showed the final moments before the disaster, as the pilot reported light icing and turbulent conditions at an altitude of 35,000 feet, requesting permission to climb an additional 2,000 feet to avoid the bad weather.
However, the situation quickly escalated, leading the pilot to issue a mayday distress call, announcing a sharp loss of altitude, as the descent rate accelerated from eight thousand feet to nearly ten thousand feet per minute, amid signs of losing control of the aircraft.
In the final minutes, the aircraft's captain reported via radio that it had entered a state of (overspeed), while it was descending at a rate of up to 20,000 feet per minute, before sending a final message indicating that the plane was heading for a crash landing.
Aviation experts suggested that what is known as (severe icing) was a major factor behind the incident. Commercial pilot and CEO of (Jettly), Justin Krabi, explained that this phenomenon occurs when supercooled water droplets freeze upon contact with the aircraft's structure, leading to ice accumulation at a rate that exceeds the capabilities of de-icing or anti-icing systems.
He added that these accumulations alter the aerodynamic properties of the wings, reduce lift, and increase air resistance, as well as raise the likelihood of the aircraft losing its ability to fly safely, especially when coinciding with strong atmospheric disturbances.
The aircraft had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom Airport in Texas heading to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas before crashing on Sunday afternoon. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the scene as resembling the fall of a (rocket) behind a large hole and thick smoke, with no injuries reported on the ground.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are still conducting their investigations to uncover the final causes of the incident, while initial information indicated that six people were killed, although a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the aircraft was carrying nine people at the time of takeoff.
