Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that a new round of direct negotiations with Ukraine will be held soon. He reiterated that his country will insist that Kyiv abolish all discriminatory laws in Ukraine in the new round of direct negotiations.
Lavrov emphasized during a speech at the international meeting on security issues today (Wednesday) that Russia's demands for Ukraine to be a non-nuclear and neutral state must be met, regardless of the form of resolution to the conflict. He stated that Ukraine's neutral status remains one of his country's main demands in the peace negotiations. The Foreign Minister noted that Moscow is closely monitoring NATO's military buildup along its border with Russia.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his country is still waiting to receive a memorandum promised by Russia regarding its demands related to reaching a peace agreement, at a time when Kyiv accuses Moscow of obstructing peace talks and refusing to halt its invasion.
He added in statements to reporters that Moscow had committed to delivering the memorandum to Kyiv, and that his country would review those proposals and respond immediately upon receiving them. Zelensky proposed holding a trilateral meeting that would include him, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
While Trump has recently made sharp criticisms of his Russian counterpart, the Kremlin has repeatedly stated that it is preparing its terms and proposals for peace talks.
The U.S. administration launched mediation efforts months ago to stop the war between Kyiv and Moscow, and U.S. envoy Steve Whitkoff visited Russia about four times, during which he met with Putin. However, Moscow has so far rejected a U.S.-Ukrainian-European proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, considering that it requires further discussion.
Meanwhile, Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Istanbul more than a week ago and agreed to exchange hundreds of prisoners from both sides, without achieving any political breakthrough.
