Estimates from the international environmental organization Greenpeace revealed that the extreme heat waves and droughts experienced in Germany during the summer of this year have cost the country's economy no less than 36 billion euros, equivalent to about 1% of the gross domestic product.
The organization explained in a statement that these losses extended to several vital sectors, including the labor market, transportation, health, agriculture, forestry, and education, at a time when high temperatures and drought imposed additional burdens on the economy, infrastructure, and public services.
The organization noted that the drought caused losses to forests estimated at around 7.5 billion euros, while losses in the agricultural sector amounted to about 3.4 billion euros.
It drew attention to the fact that the estimates did not include the full environmental losses resulting from wildfires, including the loss of biodiversity, the decline in forests' ability to protect drinking water sources and reduce soil erosion, as well as the damage to their capacity to regulate the local climate.
